I have seen this problem reported before.

Suggestions from here and HP tech support were to change from "HP
Standard TCP/IP Port" to (Microsoft) "Standard TCP/IP Port".
While this seems to fix the problem, it causes others.

The installer created a printer named "HP Officejet 7300 series".
Apparently, when "HP Digital Imaging Monitor" starts up, it trys to
communicate with the printer using the same mechanism that this printer
is configured to use.
When you change this to (Microsoft) "Standard TCP/IP Port", it breaks
"HP Digital Imaging Monitor".
Scanning from and application does not work.
The Scan To button does not allow one to scan to an application on the
Computer.

Another solution is to install an new printer with a different name and
use the "Standard TCP/IP Port" for it.
The problem with this is that there doesn't seem to be any way to tell
it to use the 7300 series drivers.
You can choose another similar driver but the installation warns you
that some features may not work.
HP tech support suggested using Deskjet 990C.

Why can't I install an new 7300 printer with a different port monitor?
Why must I use a similar (not totally compatible?) printer driver?

This and other problems convinced me that I had a firmware problem.
I am convinced that most of the technical support people at HP doesn't
even know what firmware is.
All that HP could do was offer my money back.
I am more stubborn than that.

I returned the printer and got one with a different firmware revision.
My first printer was RL3001xNx and my second was RL4001xNx.
It is too early to say, but this seems to have fixed this problem.
So far, the printer recognizes job completion immediately.

I spoke too soon.
Using the default "HP Standard TCP/IP Port" the printer still takes
minutes to recognize when a print job is done.
This means back-to-back print jobs take a long time.
It just took me 20 minutes in Quicken to align my checks!
What's the deal?
