What are side-view games?(definition)

May I know what's the definition of side-view games?
Are they games that only allow the 'character' to move sideways only or other meanings?

Um~maybe I shd give some examples which I think might be it..but not quite sure..

e.g Super Mario Bros, Sonic the hedgehog,games that goes all the way right to progress, etc??
