How do I run a Repair on Windows XP Home if I don't have a floppy on the laptop? I'm tired of rebuilding the system from scratch and would like to just repair the C:\Windows\System32\Config\System file.

Register or log in to remove.

Just boot off the CD and there is a repair option.

I would if I could. The only cds I have are the 'recovery' disks from Toshiba and it will NOT repair. Only reinstall Windows XP Home after reformatting the drive. I've tried with my XP Pro cd but that doesn't work either.

Why won't the XP Pro CD work?

If you copy an XP Home CD you should be able to install using the legal CD Key that came with the laptop.

Also once your system is running you should make your own backup using true image or ghost.

I would repartion the drive into C: and D:, install everthing on C: keep all your documents on D: and use Ghost to backup C: to a file on D:.

Then you can restore without losing any of your important documents.

Inphoenix,

Can you tell us what happens after you put the WinXP Pro CD into the drive, then reboot? Are you closely paying attention to the screen at that time, because there should be a message in white text (black background) that says, "Press any key to boot from CD..."
