GTA 4 impossibly slow

Hi there

Just got GTA 4, and it is nearly impossibly slow, even on the lowest settings.
My computer:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x
GPU: HIS H585FN1GD Radeon HD 5850 (Cypress Pro) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
MOB: GIGABYTE GA-890XA-UD3
PSU: XFX Black Edition P1-750B-CAG9 750W
OS: Win7

It is not that I simply expected more from my computer, the game lags to the point that I can't even play it.
Any thoughts?

I also have the same problem.........
but when i patched it with 1.0.3.0/1.0.4.0(forgot which one of these two), I was able to play on everything maxed out..
and my gpu is worse and slower than yours..

GTA IV does have really bad port.
How much FPS do you get ? I know it is unplayable, but just for an info.

Since you have a good video card and processor, patching the game, as it was said above, can give you better performance.

Thank you everyone. Sorry, I had to go away for a week and couldn't check my email (imagine, there still are places on Earth without internet access).

Latest patch (1.0.8.0) fixed everything- paying flawlessly now. Albeit, not on the "highest settings", but it is good enough.
Gman450: how can I tell how many fps do I get?

You can download and install "Fraps" application..
Start the app first and then start any game and note the range of FPS that u get..
and you can play on maximum settings with patch 1.0.4.0
