What's The Best Athlon-C DDR Motherboard?

Since the MSI K7-Master S is basically vaporware until it can be found, I figured on settling with the Asus A7M 266. It's not AMD recommended... but Asus is a more reputible name than Biostar/FIC/Gigabyte (which are the reccomended available AMD 761 boards).

Does anybody have this board? Is it the best purchasable option right now for the Athlon-C?

I've heard some bad things about the Asus A7M266. You may want to consider the FIC AD11 instead. For one, the A7M266 doesn't have multiplier adjustments, but the AD11 does. Also quite a few of the reviews I read noted that the A7M266 was unstable in their tests. I found the MSI K7-Master S at ComponentsDirect if you want that one instead, but it is $379!

I emailed ComponentsDirect about this motherboard and they never responded. They have it listed as K7T but have the specs at the K7. I ask them to clarify which one it was and they refused to respond. There order form consists of an email form and that sounds a little shadey to me.

I've never ordered anything from them. The only reason I mentioned them is because it was the only place I found a K7-Master.

A7M266? Not stable? Not what i heared...
And yes the FIC AD11 is very performant but you might want to wait for the Mobos with the VIA KT266 chipset cuz the AMD760 chipset isn't mature enough...

So does anybody have the FIC AD11? (Or can someone point me to some good AMD DDR motherboard reviews?) -- Normally I'd be looking to TomsHardware for such a thing but other than chipsets nothing like that has been done here.
March 11, 2001 1:31:20 AM

I have heard that the A7M266 had some problems early on. However I seen a recent review on aceshardware.com that said it performed nicely and was perfectly stable. Maybe they fixed whatever was wrong. I too may end up with this board if I cant find the MSI K7 Master or the MSI K7T266. The review on aceshardware also recommended useing crucial or corsair PC2100 on the A7M266

Someday I will stop asking all the questions!

Check out Shuttle. They have some new boards, AK30, AK31, AK32. The AK 30 is not out yet accroding to the site. The 31 looks nice. The 32 seems to have more control over clock and can using both SDRAM and DDR. Don't know if it can use noth at the same time.

And they have 6 PCI slots, total of 7.

Here is every review I could find on the AMD 760 motherboards. I'm not sure about the quality of these reviews though. I read most of them, but not all of them.

Good work dude... If anyone knows of additional links, perhaps we can keep adding to yoda's comprehensive start and create a complete review-database (yoda, maybe even start a new thread to do that?)!

Famous don't cut it with me. Asus is famous but I know of several who won't buy their boards any more because they had to much trouble.

And any given board maker may make a great board with one chipset and the next chipset board they make is total crap. The KT266 is a new chipset ad each makeer must be evaluated from scratch.

Shuttle has been around a long time. Maybe they will make the great board for this chipset. maybe it will be someone totaly new to the market. We just have to wait an see.

.... I don't see it there dfoster.
March 12, 2001 1:12:51 AM

The KT7 Master or the K7T Master are not the right board. Well the correct name is K7 Master and K7 Master-S(SCSI) They may be selling the K7 Master-S but since they cant get the name right I imagin there service sucks. I mean come on whats with the lack of accuracy? This isn't directed towards you in anyway, I am just venting. Plus the K7 Master should be around $180-$200, not $300+

Someday I will stop asking all the questions!

I'm waiting for the new Asus A7A266 motherboard, which will be out in Canada on March 28th. This motherboard has a 266MHz FSB and will take either SDRAM or DDR RAM having two sockets for each.
March 12, 2001 4:09:47 PM

I find it very interesting that ASUS decided to design and introduce the A7A266, a DDR board based on the ALiMagik1 chipset. I get the distinct impression that they are fed-up with their A7M266's problems (AMD Northbridge - VIA Southbridge).

BTW, IWill's KA266 (the first DDR board to be based on the ALiMagik1 chipset) has been reported in several articles and a great many posts to be extremely stable, if not a KT133A killer.
March 13, 2001 4:12:55 PM

There is no question that ASUS has had problems with their A7M266. The question is whether or not ASUS will continue producing that board (they stopped shipping it while trying to remedy its problems)!

IMO, ASUS introduced the reliable ALiMagik1-based A7A266 as an interim sales "pinch-hitter" until they release their A7V266 based on the VIA KT266 chipset (due out next month).
March 14, 2001 3:18:10 AM

So which is right for the K7M266? The AMD site that says 200 MHz FSB or the Asus website claiming 266 Mhz? My guess is the Asus website is correct. Yes?

Well, we finally got a THG comparision of all of these. It really didn't say much about stability or reccomending one over any other though, which I find disappointing.

That was my thought too!

Any idea when the A7V266 is coming?

I have started to see the A7A from Asus being offered by some online retailers (with the Ali chipset instead of AMD's)..... I have not located any reivews of it yet.
