A few months ago I formatted my hard disk and re installed win98SE. I was using a USB mouse but through the install setup would not detect it (I had to use a ps2 port). This gave me many problems with conflicts.
I've just ordered a new computer and once I put it together I would like to be able to use my USB mouse through windows setup. Is there any way to get USB support through setup? I was using a boot disk to get CD ROM support I think I may need to put a USB driver on it or something.

I have a USB mouse and it seems to be able to detect my mouse on setup. Even if you do not have mouse during setup, changing the mouse from PS/2 to USB won't create any conflict. Are you sure your mouse's alright?

I had USB on in the motherboard. Once windows installed it detected the mouse and the USB ports when installing hardware drivers. Then I get an occasional prompt to put a mouse in the ps2 port and have a very unresponsive USB mouse. After reinstalling windows from inside windows it starts working fine and the ps2 mouse port with the yellow thing in device manager vanishes.

I'm using an ABIT SL6, I'm not sure if it is an issue with this motherboard, my copy of windows, or my boot disk. But I cannot think of anything else.

It is possible that the motherboard BIOS does not recognize a USB mouse.

After installing a USB mouse on several boards, only one older board (TYAN S1598 Socket7) would not recognize the mouse. I also never flashed the BIOS with the latest update.

Newer motherboards with an updated BIOS, I have experienced no problems provided the USB support is enabled within the BIOS. Plug the USB mouse into the USB port while the computer is running, and a dialogue box should appear "Found New Hardware", and will then install the necessary drivers from Win98SE.

You can then pull the plug on the PS/2 mouse, and the USB mouse should take over.

A reboot won't hurt anything, and you can leave all drivers in the Device Manager, and switch the mice if ever necessary.

USB mice are hot pluggable, PS/2 mice must be pklugged in before bootup.

I do not think USB mouse is BIOS dependent. I run Partition Magic 5 and they did not have drivers for USB mouse and therefore I cannot use my mouse for the program. It is clearly software dependent.
