Screen Blanking

Forum Windows XP : General Discussion Screen Blanking

Hi, I wonder if anyone can take pity on me and help me with a problem that's driving me mad?

Hardware: Tyan Tiger 133 S1834 MoBo, 1024Mb ram, 2X PIII 833Mhz.
MX-440 GeForce 4 Video Card, SCSI 80Gb HDD.

Yes I know it's old :-)

Now the problem: Occasionaly, the video on the monitor will blank for a second or two.

This ONLY happens with IE6, MS Word 2003 and MS Excel 2003. If any other program or just the desktop is in use there is NO problem.

The mouse pointer still can be moved a few seconds prior to the blanking, however any selections made appear to have done nothing, and only when the picture returns are you aware that indeed something did happen.

I *think* this problem has only happened since XP SP2 update, but I'm not wholly sure (I've been putting up with it for a while).

I have reinstalled the video drivers and Via 4-in-1 drivers, and so far no joy. I have done full virus scans with Trend Micro, Norton and Koperskey and nothing found.

Please, please help!!!

This used to happen to me on my old 15" Sony monitor. Couldn't ever find out the cause though, I just had to get used to it. It stopped happening when I replaced it with a 19" Dell monitor, so I suspect it's the monitor, not your system. Hope this helps.

 I don't only break your heart, I also break your pelvis

Hi thanks for replying.

No it's not a monitor problem, as I said, this only happens if I'm using IE6 or MS Word or Excel.

The monitor (a Sony 20" TFT) is also used with my IBM laptop, and no problems at all. I have just come back to IE6 after being logged onto AOL for more than an hour, without a single glitch.

Ten seconds into my session with IE6, and the first blackout!

Some more info, This problem seems to occur only if I'm actually doing something - if I leave a web page open, no blanking. If I leave a word or excel document open no blanking until I start typing!

Any ideas?

TIA

Chris.
