I always thought that the pixel was squared, until today the professor of my Computer Graphics course described the pixel as circular. When i came up to him after the class, he insisted that the pixel was more of a blob and he sited the book "Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice" by Foley as reference. Does anyone know for sure the shape of the pixel??? Even the tomshardware article "Birth of the Pixel" does not mention the shape of the pixel. Any info is appreciated!
I usually get pissed off if they´re out of milk in the grocerystore.
I stand there in the store and curse all and everything but then I suddenly
start thinking of the unfortunate people who live in poor countries...
They have to walk for miles to get some drops of water from a well and
when they arrive it´s probably empty, that must truly suck.
It depends on what kind of monitor you have.
Aperture Grill monitors have three rectangular openings side by side, one red, one green, one blue, giving a square pixel.
Trinitron monitors have three round openings, giving a triangular pixel.
I think you're both right and that they look like this:

OOOOOO
OOOOOO
OOOOOO
OOOO

In a purely theoretical sense the pixel must be square as they are arranged in a squear grid pattern.
However what you use to view your pixels determines their actual shape.
If you use a LCD display they do tend to be square, or very close to square.
If you use a normal CRT monitor however the pixel comes out as a bright circular or slighly oval dot due to the way a monitor works.
