Resolution switching from game to desktop, harmful?

My computers desktop resolution is 1400x900 and my games I play on there I always set their ingame resolution to about 1024x768 so I can get better performance out of my games. The only thing that bugs me is when I close the game and it switches back to the desktop the screen flashes a few times before it goes back to the desktop, I figure it is resizing itself back up to the bigger screen size. I was wondering if I am stressing out my computer by doing this switching between the 2 different screen sizes?

It's fine. Monitors are made to change resolutions although LCD's look better at native resolution. Also, most new monitors have protection built in and will report if the frequency is out of range.
