How do you connect to the authentication server for steam

Hello,
I am trying to play Dawn of War 2 online but whenever I do try it says I have to connect to the authentication server and that to make sure hte steam client is running. What do I do?

Is your Copy a legit copy?

you have to start steam, and use it to install the game, even if you have the disk. (it will install off the disk instead of downloading from the steam server) then run the game from inside steam. then follow the on screen instructions for authentication
