Anybody know of any decent Anti-Virus software out there? Rather it be free, or payed for. I have used Norton and i am using Mcaffe right now. And both don't really seem to working that well, at least to me they don't.

Sorry, but the new Avast! didn't do well in testing. Same for AVG, before someone mentions that. Now, if you want hands-off (after setup and config), then go with F-Secure. If you want to keep a close eye on all the gears and pulleys, then go with Kaspersky Personal Pro.

There is a previous discussion regarding this same subject. Here's the thread:

McAfee may do a fair job (as tests show), but there are numerous issues that would keep me from letting anyone I cared about pay good money for it. I've found their support to be a little on the low end. As for Norton, you use Norton only if you never, ever want to use any other security software without reinstalling Windows. Most publishers won't even offer you support if there has ever been a Norton product installed. This is a fact, since I write software reviews and have had them tell me this 'to my face'.

Another thing to check is if your ISP provides some form of protection for free as part of the overall service. Roadrunner provides EZArmor (A Computer Associates product - I don't use it but its provided free if I want it), AOL provides somthing else.
I use Symantec AV because its provided by my employer for use on all company machines and also encouraged for use on employees personal machines along with ZoneAlarm Integrity Client. SAV seems to work very well and its live update keeps my machines protected as quickly as possible as far as I can tell without any knowledge of any independant testing authority.
More and more this is a service ISPs are offering to help them compete.
Check it out...

iCSA standard virus testing. See their site for the figures or look up their results in the latest issue of Tech Support Alert (www.techsupportalert.com) newsletter.

This is from the tech site you referenced: <A HREF="http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_16_free_utilities.htm" target="_new">Best Free Anti-Virus Software</A> ...
There are two equal recommendations in this category. First there is AVG Antivirus 7.0 Free Edition ... Equally impressive is the free Avast! ...

I followed your link and stared the download of EICAR.com. The operation never completed adn I recieved a window from SAV with the following text:

Parent Server: MWNAV
Scan type: Realtime Protection Scan
Event: Virus Found!
Virus Name: Virus name: EICAR Test String
File: C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxxx\Desktop\eicar.com
Location: Quarantine
Computer: my_computer_name
User: me
Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine succeeded : Access denied
Date found: Tue Mar 01 11:14:49 2005

Yep ... it's a test to see if you AV will pick up the harmless test string in all 3 instances ... read the EICAR web page ...

Thanks,
Actually I've seen it before on their webpage but never used it. I know there are other factors involved besides just being able to recognize a single string.
Just got a company-wide warning this morning about a new varient of the Beagle virus. emails with attachments with zip files including the word <i><font color=red>price</font color=red></i> in the filename.

I'm not sure what to make of this "testing" site. The last reference I could make to a test of Avast was in December of 2004, and what was tested was version 4.1 ...and it passed.

Currently my Avast version is 4.6xxxx and I could find no reference to Avast in the Jan. '05 tests.

And this is what I have got to believe...it matters when the test is done. For instance suppose they run their test on the latest version of Norton on March 1, 2005 at the time 18:36:47. But at 18:36:51 Norton releases a new definitions file. Because they do this four seconds too late as it were, their product may not fare as well in the test as Symantec that released their latest definitions file 30 minutes earlier in time to make the test. Hmmmm...

I've tried a bunch of them and Avast is what I've chosen to keep using. I can't remember why I rejected all of the others because it has been over a year since I switched. I do know that I got rid of Norton after my "free subscription" ran out...Too bad the only way to rid yourself of it is a complete format of the drive and reinstall of the OS.

My ASUS Mobo came with TREND MICRO and I havent had one problem. The amount of Spam and spyware as well as adware as reduced drastically. This things updates almost daily so they must be staying on top of things. Its an Anti Virus, Firewall combo.

AVG is a good product. Never got me in trouble. Coupled with Sygate I have pretty good protection.
