It means you have an different version I believe.Everybody is probably running on the 1.5 patch.

I know that he has a different version then me, but is there a way i can play against him without having to buy a new cd

You shouldnt need a new cd, you dont get different versions of the same game. He may however be playing an expansion or a mod, Special forces, Euro Forces, Armoured Combat? Make sure you both have the latest patch (from link above) and it will just work.
