I need a Pentium III processor based computer and i want dual processors. anybody know of a chipset to use that'd be good for that? I need to be able to use 133 Mhz RAM, and have more than 512 MB of RAM. ATA 100 is also a big need. The closest thing I found was the Intel 815 stuff, but it's got a low max RAM. Why don't intel just make a "MOTHER" board and not six of one, half dozen of the other.

hmmmm

I have a MSI 694D Pro board. There is a new one called the 694D Master-S. They both have Ultra 100 and the Master S has RAID. My 694D is rock solid under W2K. I think both will take 2-4 GB of RAM. There are also many options for both boards. Check out MSI mainsite. Run a raid setup and stripe the drives if you do lots of video.

If I remember well, the problem with 815 Intel mobos, is not that they can stand only 512MB ram. It is just that they can't recognise a dimm if it is 512MB. So, you can have 3 dimms of 128 (for example)... which is more than 512 and sure enough....
Check it out , to be sure

Well, it seems I'm wrong. Strange, because, recently I've read in 2 magazines that every single 815 mobo could not recognise the right way the 512 dimms ! It recognised them as 256MB ! I gues 2 dimms of 256 are quite enough... Don't know what's true or not, anymore. I'm soooo confused. (and to think that I'm considering changing my VIA to Intel815 !!!)

first 3 128 dimms is only 384m of ram and second the 815 chipset can only address a max of 512 so any amount above that will be wasted.

I would not dought that the 815 cant or has trouble with 512m dimms. Also remember that the 815 can only addres four banks of memory each dimm can have one or two banks and most (if not all) 256+ dimms are 2 bank.

The 815 was origially designed with the 512MB limit to preclude it's use in high-end sever systems, as INTEL was trying to capitallize on their RAMBUS investment. But it is a great chipset. I believe the only motherboard to support a 512MB DIMM is the CUSL2.

the guy asked about dual processir board, probably he got confused about the i815 - that is a single processir board... heh

Post, we'll do the "search"...

actually, the dual processor board is on the 815 chip set... maybe the 815D? i'm not sure, but i just read a long article comparing it with a VIA based dual proc board. Pro Audio gear doesn't like VIA chipsets, so i'm looking for something intel based.

I've heard something about an IWILL motherboard for dual Pentium III with DDR support.

Well, without the Via option, I think you might be out of luck. I was going to recommend the Intel OR840, but that uses RAMBUS memory. The 815 only address up to 512MB; and if you run it with PC133 memory, then you can only use two of the DIMM slots. You can use all three only if you run PC100 memory.

Yes, this is the main reason i said no to this board. I've read that the Rambus ram doesn't really help a P3 board much at all (on this site). and i've got 512 now. with sdram so cheap, i'm going to want probably 1024 cuz it's only another 200 bucks for the second 512 megs for me. (wow i love the market right now)

what would you say for the VIA chipset? The board suggested by the first reply to this post looks pretty sweet. any ideas?

I have worked with the Via chipset on both Intel and AMD platforms. As a matter-of-fact, my department server is running on a Via chipset. It's a P3V4X (VIA Pro133A) that Asus gave to me as part of the recall with the Intel 820 chipset fiasco. Surprisingly, it is very stable in the server role and I have had no problems with it. It supports up to 2GB of memory, although it is only running 256MB right now.
