Does anyone know of a software program that converts the FAT 32 File system to the NTFS file system? Thanks Ryan

WinXP has a built-in one as well.

Yes, that's right. Its called 'convert' and is a command line tool. But I wouldn't try it without first backing up all the data.

Do any of the other Partitioning software have that capability, I allready have Partition Commander it states it can convert NTFS to FAT32, or FAT16 but it doesn't say it can convert from FAT32 to NTFS, it may work also but it doesn't mention that it can work both ways? I'm running Win2K Pro and trying to bring over files from Win98SE, but I'm completely running the NTFS file system on the Win2K, I didn't use the FAT32 format option, I'm really impressed with Win2K running completely on the NTFS file system, been running it now for about 2 & 1/2 straight months not 1 crash or bluescreen, I've given up a lot of games and software thats just not compatible with Win2K, but the stability is just too good, I do have some personal files though I want to bring over thats why I'm trying to convert them over. Thanks for the response. Ryan

If you just want to bring the files over, you dont need to convert the file system. W2K also understands FAT32. Just plugin the HD and copy the files to your NTFS disks.
But i also think there is an FAT32/NTFS convertion tool under W2K. Try the windows help and search for FAT32/NTFS/convert etc.
I dont know the tool you are referring to. Who makes it?

BTW: The harddisk forum is well visited. Try posting the problem there, if this doesnt help you

Partition Magic has been known and is very well respected in the formatting sector, I am more than sure you can get it and convert safely.

For WinXP, again it's the ntconvert command (or another command) which will do the job in little time. Though there had been reports of problematic performance after converting. This was due to NTFS putting all sizes at 512 bytes and it caused a major slowdown. I think more RAM helps avoiding such. In anycase, the best recommendation usually, to many, is format upon installing Windows on a fresh clean HDD, it will ensure 99% success at full performance.

Convert works in both 2K and XP.
