Slot 1 vs Socket

I'm weighing the pro's and con's for building a new machine. I definately want it to be AMD. But my concern lies in; socket or slot?
Is there a correct answer?
What are the benifits or draw-backs?
I'm sure this has been covered before but I'm an unable to find in the "search". Any suggestions please.

It's Slot A actually. That's older technology; I'd advise you to get Socket A, which is the newer one.
