I'm thinking about switching to a national acceses plan so that I
can take advantage of 1X while I'm on the road. On the VZW site, it
states that I can get 400 "monthly home airtime minutes" for $55/month.
This is for voice or data minutes. The plan also includes unlimited
nights and weekends. I need to know if night/weekend 1X data use is
considered free or if it comes out of the 400 minutes. Anyone know the
answer? Thanks

If you are switching, then do you currently HAVE a plan? If so, you may
already have the **OPTION** on the plan you already have to allow use by
minutes as data and voice.
Don't know what you are looking at, Americas choice is only $39.95, can't
imagine what the extra $15 is for.
To answer your question, I have AC400, tethered to my laptop, and use 1X,
especially after 9pm and on weekends when it is free.

Just checked, and there is an Americas Choice 400 plan for $39.95 that
includes free nights and weekends, however there is also a national plan
with no roaming (Called National Singlerate) with 400 minutes for $55 that
does *NOT* include night and weekend minutes..
Where do you go that you would roam? Data/1X is usually only in
digital/verizon or extended network. I know there must be some roaming 1X
areas, but dang if I have any idea where it may be.... That's $15/month
extra for no roaming fees, how often do you actually roam? Depending on your
location, Maybe spend $15 a month less and get free N&W, roaming may cost 69
cents a minute, but that's about 21 minutes a month to break even, and I've
only roamed for 2 minutes in 4 years.

RED ALERT: National Access is equivalent to Single Rate National (no
roaming charges anywhere in US). Unless they have changed (and the Web
page I am looking at indicates that they have not), National Access does
NOT have either IN-Network (Mobile2Mobile) or unlimited nights/weekends.
ALL data and voice usage come out of that 400 minute bundle.
AFAIK, all America's Choice plans still come with the undocumented,
secret, "National Access" option, which DOES have unlimited Nights /
Weekends / In-Network. Data usage is billed the same as voice usage,
including as weekend/offpeak as appropriate.

Ummm, Single Rate National and National Access are very much aimed
at the business user or those who frequent roaming areas. If you call or
get called you don't have to check if you are roaming or not. You know
exactly what the bill will be each month. It's worth a lot to be able to
budget and variable costs make that difficult.

I'm the OP. It sounds like I don't need to switch then. I'm
currently on the America's Choice plan in the NE region. I get free
nights and weekends and free in network. Does that mean that I can use
the 1X data feature of my phone and only use plan minutes? I'd be
connecting via a data cable to a laptop or PDA. It sounds like that is
the case. I would then be able to use the 1X feature for free on nights
and weekends. Is this correct? Thanks.

What sort of phone do you have? Does it have an "1X" icon up by the
signal indicator (as opposed to "D" or "A" )? The feature is enabled or
not enabled on your account. You can 1) just try it. 2) look at your
account online. Select "Statements" then "Service Profile" and look
in the Enhanced Services section. You are looking for "National Access".
If it's there then you're good to go.
I think VZW wanted to charge for the feature. They pretty much had
to enable it for the Picture messaging. They used to ask what kind of
phone you had if you called to request to have it enabled. About the
time the picture messaging came out they were automatically enabling
it on most all new AC plans. If it's not there you might try calling *611
to get it enabled. Try something like "I'm going to activate a camera
phone to try it out"... If enabled as a feature like this on an AC (or
other)
plan you simply use minutes exactly as if you were making a phone call.

I believe that the "*" is no longer required. While voice dialing, the
phone kept saying that it didn't understand when I said "star six one
one," but when I said, "six one one" it dialed it and put me through
right away.

Last week on the Extended Network in Minnesota, "611" would not
function, but "*611" answered with "Welcome to SprintPCS".
So perhaps the "*" is optional only on Verizon's own network.

Its carrier dependent.
Actually for Sprint PCS, dial *2 for customer service instead of *611
or 611.

True, of course, but "611" works perfectly well on my Sprint phones.
The point was that on a 'Verizon Extended Network',
"611" didn't work from a Verizon phone, where "*611" did.

And the point is that Sprint PCS is an Extended Network partner and
when on Sprint PCS, you can use *2 instead of 611/*611, though 611
does work most of the time.

Quicks reply was pretty accurate. Things seem to work different between East
and West. I am out of Baltimore MD (almost the NE, but not N enuf
.. But
my friend in the West (Idaho), doesn't have it on his account and they tell

I would suggest doing the online/look at your bill thing for sure, my phone
model doesn't have the 1X indicator (just D or A).

I have an Audiovox 9900 with the 1X indicator. I just switched
plans so I don't have a bill to look at to see if it has National Access
enabled. I guess I'll just try it out and see if it deducts the minutes
from my peak/off-peak allotment or adds data charges. It sounds like my
current plan will do what I want. Thanks for the responses.

Yes, "*2" works for Sprint.
But when I am unaware which carrier is serving my extended network,
I always dial "*611" to make it work on the first try.
