Hello,
Before getting Cell phone service I read a bunch of reviews of the
cell phone companies. Verizon seemed to have less negative stuff and
even some positive stuff, so I got Verizon.
In general all the telecommunications companies stink and have
deceptive pricing and horrible customer service. This is why I have
held out on getting a cell phone until a couple months ago. The
deceptive pricing was one of the biggies for me, because I really like
to know what I am going to be paying for something!
Unfortunately, Verizon stinks too. They add on mystery charges when I
recieve long distance phone calls. These are "call delivery charges"
which were listed on my bill as "other charges." Very descriptive.
So now I'm ticked off at Verizon too! I really wish there was ONE,
jut ONE cell phone company that did not try to trick and decieve its
customers! There are companies that are less expensive than Verizon.
I chose them because I hoped they were better. THEY ARE NOT!
I'm now considering ruining my perfect credit by discontinueing my
service without paying the !#**ing cancellation fee.

I'll bet you have a really tough life. My sympathies.
Before you cancel and ruin your perfect credit why don't you call
*611 and ask for a better description? You said you really like
to know what you are paying for but it sounds like you would rather
not so you can blame them for deceiving you. Might have been
a mistake when your new account was set up. I'm certain it
couldn't have been anything you did or didn't do.

There's no reason to do such a stupid thing.
I've been with VZW for about 1.5 years (a family share plan with four
lines), and I've had absolutely *no* problems with them. Therefore, I'd
suggest that you contact customer service and work out the issues. If you
can't, then send VZW a message through their Website. If you are reasonable
with them, then I'm fully confident they'll be reasonable with you.

It is quite possible like Quick stated that when the account was
activated that the plan you picked maybe did not have long distance
coded properly. Years ago on my car phone I had (still have) the
Digital Choice 200 with coverage along the east coast. I was in
Vermont and I noticed I was incurring a .60¢ charge for two long
distance calls under the same call delivery notion. I called *611 and
the girl said it was because the system had to find me to deliver my
call. I told her no way would I pay a fee to have the calls find me. I
was in a state that makes the service free and to take it off. She
said she would and that it was only a courtesy. I called from home
later and spoke to a supervisor and told her what the young lady said.
She said the credit was issued and that a correction would be made to
the account.
All in all it was a mistake. Do as Quick said and call the customer
service and tell them to check out the plan coverage's if you have
Americas Choice the long distance is included and never fall for that
"Call delivery charge"

I've had some lulus with Verizon. But, then I had ATTWS
before that, and I have generally found that if you talk right
to VZW Customer Service you will probably get a lot of
help. If you can VZW CS in Salt Lake City or Sacramento
my experience is that you will get a higher quality rep. If
you get one in Los Angeles, hang up for your own benefit.

What is a "call delivery charge" for a received call?? I understand long
distance charges for calls one makes, and I understand airtime charges,
but a "call delivery charge" for a call one receives??.

I remember reading that call delivery charges might apply in addition
to roaming charges. I sort of thought it was only in the context of
roaming... but then I didn't persue it since I decided to buy a prepaid
plan for the 1 week vacation outside of my local digital choice plan.

As far as I was told many years ago is that its similar to roaming
(find me) and it is yet another way to make a buck or .30¢ from the
customer. If you are roaming and you pay for a service why would they
have to charge you to find you? I believe the cell towers transmit
your location when you are active in their sector. But I could be
wrong.

Call delivery charges are very simple.
If you have a local calling plan that doesn't include long distance, you are
charged for long distance if you're out of your local calling area. That
area is determined by your are code and prefix. Someone calls you while
you're out of your local calling area, the call is routed to you and you're
charged a long distance. If you're roaming the charges can be higher than
what's stated on your plan for long distance because you are charged by the
system you're roaming on.

There used to be (still is?) a pretty large difference in LDC and AC plans.
Maybe it had to do with some of the promos attached only to the LDC
plans (LDC = Local Digital Choice).
The LDC plans defined a solid geographical area (usually a few states).
By "solid" I meant there were no holes. *Anywhere* within the area
that you could get a signal there was no roaming. It was a mini Single
Rate plan. Usually long distance was included (promo?) as long as
you were calling from or receiving within your LDC area. The price
was the same or similar to an AC plan except that you got more
minutes on the LDC plan (significant). So the trade off was roaming
outside of your LDC area. For example there are/were some holes in
the AC map in some of the remote areas around Tahoe, Nevada, and
Northern CA. There was signal there but you were roaming.
The wife and I used to go to the East Coast 1 week each year. Other
than that we stayed in the CA/Nevada area. The LDC plan was a
great deal. We both had dual NAM phones back then and dealt with
the week on the East Coast by getting 2 new FreeUP plans each year.
$30 card with $30 intro bonus card -- $60 for 400 anytime minutes each.
So I was paying about $75 for a LDC family share that was equivalent
(except for the roaming part) to the $110 AC family share I have now.

So the "call delivery" charge is essentially the long distance call
from your home area to wherever you are currently roaming. When someone
calls your number, it goes to your local system, which "forwards" it to
the system you are roaming on. But since this is a charge by your home
system for forwarding the call, why should the roaming system have a
say in how much you are charged?

They don't. It's a fixed charge. What I'm not clear on is when the
"call delivery" charge is applied. A few years ago I was roaming
in N. Myrtle Beach, SC and the wife was roaming in Orlando, FL.
We were both on a CA LDC plan that included long distance.
We were calling each other. There were roaming charges on each
end but nothing else.
side note: has the OP posted a follow up? was it simply something
like neglecting to do the PRL thing when activating? or did they just
decide to withhold payment in order to ruin their perfect credit?

I concur. I had no trouble with VZW's service when I lived in the Ohio/Michigan
market but Verizon Los Angeles seems to ignore my particular part of Southern
California, and their lack of attention to major repair issues in my area
caused me to fire them and port my number to Sprint. (Yes, Sprint IS much
better up here, at least for me.)

shhhhh... the guy is miserable. He has a miserable life. Everybody
is out to screw him over and VZW is just like all the other lousy
cell providers. Obviously he doesn't know about Cingular, the
shining white knight of the industry, the Mr. Clean of cell providers.

Independent reviews? Company written reviews? Customer reviews?

This statement is a little contradictory- you generalize and then accuse all
telecoms of deceptively pricing. Isn't that like saying, "In most cases,
all cell phones users don't read their contract?"
>This is why I have
> held out on getting a cell phone until a couple months ago. The

And that is what your contract was for. And with the "bunch of reviews" you
read, you should have known to ask specific questions if you needed more
detail.

You already knew that- "Verizon seemed to have less negative stuff and even
some positive stuff, so I got Verizon." That doesn't sound like someone who
expected a perfect situation.

Did a call to Verizon bring a better explanation?

So as a user of a single carrier's phone for a couple of months, you know
that they ALL trick and deceive. Care to elaborate?

Your reviews should have made that perfectly clear.
