As far as dragging objects into the render window,
they will be placed on the floor. But that floor will
be where your feet are, which is often very different
from where the model's floor is. .If you cannot see
it, you are too close. Raise a little into the air or
back off a little, and you will see it, where you were
a moment ago

It's been a while (six months?) since I've actually worked in the
editor, but I'm pretty sure you need to press at least one key to have
an object fall to the ground.
I'm mostly sure because before I realized this, my chests were higher
than those on a cornfed cheerleader's.
I've also spotted floating flora while playing the xbox version, so
the professionals have missed this at times as well.
