I have a compaq 5726. Apparently the motherboard only supports 550 mhz so I am considering replacing it all together and getting a P III in the 1 ghz range. Any recommendations on what to purchase and what to be aware of?
Thanks!

First most Compaqs are not OEM guaranteed. This means you probaly won't be able to just take the motherboard out and put say a asus ATX board. I would recomend anyone to stay away from Compaq. You will have to change the case and motherboard.

Your motherboard should be ATX, but check to make sure. If it is, then check to see how many slots you have, if you have 7, you can use a full ATX board, and the Asus CUSL2 is the best solution. If your case is ATX but has less than7 slots, it is a Micro ATX, and the Asus CUSL2-M is the best soltuion.

to reduce cost as much as posible, but if he is ready to spend on new board/cpu he'd better choose AMD.
