what to build?

I HAVE BUILT SEVERAL DURAN AND THUNDERBIRD SYSTEMS. I AM GETTING READY TO BUILD A DIFFERENT ONE WITH A RADEON ATI DDR VIDEO CARD. WHAT MOTHERBOARD AND CPU WOULD YOU RECOMMEND? I HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO TRY A PENTIUM 4 SETUP, OR I CAN SAVE BY BUYING A PENTIUM III. I THOUGHT ABOUT ANOTHER ATHLON WITH DDR MEMORY, BUT NOBODY SEEMS TO LIKE THEM. THANKS.

I love my new Athlon sys based around an A7M266 mobo and DDR ram. It's stable and very fast.

If you have time to wait, it might be worth checking out the new SiS 735 chipset on the horizon for Athlon and DDR. It looks like it might give the AMD 761 chip a run for it's money.

well... I've built the following:

ASUS A7M266 w/mobo mods
AMD TB 1.333
Swiftech MC426-a cooler (with mods)
512 Crucial PC2100 DDR mem
2 75 Gig IBM ATA 100 drives
TEAC 16x10x40 CD-RW
Toshiba SDM-1502 (16x) DVD
Sound Blaster Live Platinum 5.1
ATI All-In-Wonder DDR AGP video card
3com 10/100 NIC
Creative Labs Modem Blaster (flex 56k/V.90 auto sensing
Antec SX-1240 case and every case hole has a fan.. 400 watt psu
keyborad/mouse

yup.. I've overcloced it a bit, runs like nothing I've ever seen.. be sure to remove the VID1 jumper to bring the voltage to the memory back to 2.5v instead of 2.8v (stupid asus for making the 2.8 the default).

I've had the system up to 1.8GHZ and the buss up to 160... and it was rock solid... several days of pushing it hard..

So.. for the price differential I don't know why I'd build an INTEL... although, in the past, I would build noting but INTEL... If INTEL ever get's it's act together.. then perhaps I'll build another one.. but not right now.. now I'm waiting for the Palimino to come out...

Could you explain what you mean by the above "w/mobo mods" and "(with mods)"

Is the A7M 266 worth the extra money over the A7V 133?

Is it for your own use or you happily built for others? You can build an Intel box, if you haven't done it yet. Else, I say, why not wait for the dual amd board?

It don't come easy.......not always.
