I have a IBM think pad lap top with Win 2000 Pro and it wont boot! Each time it will stop, flash an error message and then start over again. Thsi was given to me like this! The error message is as follows;
STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot laod hive (file}:
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\:Software
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Any ideas? Was it a virus that wipped out the hard drive.
Thanks Bill

If this laptop was given to you like this I'd just format it. A windows repair install might get you booting again but I would only do that to get data off and then do a clean format.

So how do I format it like this? Should I do the repair install first, then format the drive?
Thanks

If there isn't any data on there you want/need to save then just go straight to formatting. You will need an orrigional windows cd. Put in the disc and when the computer is starting up it should ask something like "press any key to boot from cd". Hit a key and go through the windows setup. You will be asked whether you want to format the drive or not near the end, choose to format it.
