Which is the best package for all around antivirus software, span and firewall. I have read mixed reviews about Norton in particular it slows the pc down... but any ideas out there?

No single app is "best" for all of the scumware you mentioned ... takes a "suite" of apps ... and there are some excellent free ones available ...

I concur with Mr. Barnes. Might I suggest Kerio firewall and AVG anti-virus as freeware. Both are excellent.

Norton is bloated and it does slow any system down.

I have been using Sygate personal firewall and Mcafee anti-virus. Of course, Mcafee was free via the university is the reason that I have been using it. AVG is a good program and possessed good experiences with the software. While Norton products are bloatware. Norton does produce good products which is why the are leading the industry. It always comes down to personal preference. I personally do not like Zone Alarm because it was all bugging me referencing applications but that is my opinion. You will find that a lot of people really like Zone Alarm. There is also Panda Software. I used Panda for a short time just to try it out and liked it. Of course graduate school is killing me referencing funds so I had to look for free alternatives.

If the price you are looking for is "free" here is the list of the best solutions-In My Opinion:

Anti-Virus: AVG
FireWall:Zonealarm
Anti-spy/scumware:AdAware SE, Spybot search and distroy 1.3 and Microsofts anti spyware program

I'm not looking for them. I'm using them. I didn't like ZoneAlarm. I'd go with either Kerio or Sygate. If you want a challenging one then try Tiny out. Panda is also good.

If you get NIS, stick with 2003 and stay clear from 2004-2005 for they are too zealous and not only will slow your rig down BUT also frackin hose your machine. That NIS 2003 is the best out there for the comp gurus/enthuaists.

I use McAfee v8.0 Enterprise which I get through work, but that's a little costly. Panda (www.pandasoftware.com) has a good package that doesn't kill your computer's resources.
Definately worth checking out.
