DVD rom (read only memory) uslually applies to disks rather then the drives which are commanly refered to as burners or writers. Some drives will have a label saying RW others just super multi or some such phrase.
I have yet to see a drive that was made in the last 3 years or so that was anything but a burner, since burners are now cheaper then read only drives were in their day.
I can remember paying about $100AU for a Pioneer dvd reader, where now I can get a burner for $50AU and less for some brands, I got a LiteOn for $35AU with software.
