I'm running a W2kpro/98 machine on an MSIk7tpro2a mobo, I'm using a WD40gig ATA100/7200rpm drive also using SP2 (no problems yet:) and the VIA431 drivers on both OS's. The problem is that in Sandra Sisoft during the HD benchmark my score is lower than a ata66 drive and thats on both OS's. The DMA is checked in both OS's too. Is there something that I can do to speed up the performance of my drive? I've done a full defrag on the drive and still no luck. I don't feel I'm getting the full performance out of my drive.

Thanks

It is possible for your ATA 100 drive to be slower than an ATA 66 drive.
Remember the 100 in the ATA 100 specification is 100 MB/sec, but this refers to the maximum transfer rate of the ATA interface.

The actual transfer rate of the disk itself, even an ATA 100 disk is much less than 100 MB/sec. In fact there are currently no ATA 100 disks available that come even close to exceeding the 66MB/sec maximum transfer rate of an ATA 66 interface.

A typical rate for a fast ATA 100 disk would be about 40MB/sec, and this would be the maximum rate, and would only be achieved when the disk heads are at the outside edge of the platter. Towards the centre of the same disk the transfer rate may drop to something like 22MB/sec, which is below the maximum rate of an ATA 33 interface.

In other words the speed of current ATA disk interfaces considerably exceeds that of the disks that are connected to them.

If you have DMA disk transfers enabled then you are probably getting all the performance you are likely to get with your current disks.

I hope this explains things for you

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of that. It still bites though.........you buy something that says what it says and then you learn otherwise.

also, remember that an ide controller will only run at the speed of the slowest device on the bus. so, if you have a cd-rom or slower hard drive hooked up as a slve to the ata 100 hard disk, it will run at the speed of the slower device. most people forget about this

Hello,

I have a SuperTrak100 w/ 5 drives in a raid5 one is a spare...slower than 1 dma33 drive.

Supertrak100 w/4 drives raid0 slower than 1 dma33 drive.

Fasttrak100 w/4 drives raid0 slower than 1 dma33 drive.
Fasttrak100 built in w/2 drives raid0 slower than 1 dma 33 dirve.

Fasttrak100 w/ 3 drives much faster than an ata100 drive

adaptec 2400 w/ 4 drives raid5 one spare slower than a dma33.

Come on man we are talking raid the speed of my setups should be much faster but they are not they suck...the only one that works right is the one I have at home...all the others are in testing to see what the hell is up with them.

I have called promise and the tech admitted that sisoft makes them look like sh!t...they tell you to use io meter. Hope it helps...didn't to much for me.

That's a novel approach to problem solving !

You got a benchmark that gives a result that you don't like, so just find one that gives a more favourable number.

But then I guess they probably wouldn't tell you that their product wasn't very fast.

Oh, the drive is the only thing on that channel. The DVD and CDRW are on the secondary channel. At one time I was getting scores in-between ATA66 and ATA100 but now, they are lower than ATA66.
