Microsoft hasn't released the date or details for the free replacement offer (yet). XP64 has gone gold, but that's as much as they've told us. However, there is that one detail: XP Pro gets a free copy of XP64, but XP Home DOES NOT get it free.

No it ain't. Wusy gave me the difference. Besides, until everything runs at 64bit, these forums will be flooded with questions.

I told TheChosenOne in one of the threads that the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. Had to specify of course that he could be flamed !

Besides, Mr. Barnes just asked if there are applications out there available for 64bit. Stupid marketing strategy if you ask me. Then again, looking at it from the other side it's actually a good idea.

The first software to be 64bit obviously has to be the OS. Everything else will follow. The beauty of the new OS is that it runs 32bit software as well.

Wusy's answer isn't correct either. A pirated piece of software is one that you stole, while a legitimate one is one that you bought. Generally. With XP there are multiple ways to pirate the software from stealing a corporate version to hacking a regular version into a corporate version. Both of these don't require activation. Either way, if you stole your OS, you pirated it.

Just so I don't end up in the crossfire, my software is as legal as the bald eagle.

What if I didn't buy it? What if it was given to me as a gift with all the paperwork up to and including the receipt and packing? Is that still pirated 'cause I didn't buy it myself?

No, that's legal. You have to steal it for it to be illegal.

Another thing you said is interesting. "Stealing a corporate version", now who would be able to steal a corporate version? A corporate employee? Or did someone storm a corporation and went to the MS holy vault and stole the corporate version and handed it out on Internet?

Dude, stealing is not that hard to figure out and I'm sure you know what it means...

Someone simply took their corporate version, which is a pro version without the registration requirement, and put it on the net. There were 3 corporate versions though. One was a clean rip, one was a "donkey" rip which some had problems with since I believe it was a patched beta copy, and the other was just the files you would need to turn a pro installation into a corporation installation.

I believe the most widely spread version is the first one.

Listen I don't want to discuss this any further.

This is a day-to-day subject and we can't end it. If we were to arrest everyone with a pirated copy, then we'll definitley need a bigger jail and everyone who is caught will make the biggest Union-Strike in every country combined seem like an afternoon cook-out.

Then you're still fueling cheap.

My BMW holds 63 Liters (roughly 16 gallons). I'm paying 1.15Euros (about 1.25$) per liter. That's about 79 US dollars for a full tank. There's no way I could ever afford a US car in Germany.

You guys don't have to drive as much as we do though so I wonder if it evens out. The worst part is that in California we got robbed on car insurance. Plus in the last couple of years I've been hit with several accidents including a hit and run.

Actually you're wrong. The average German puts about 30-40kilometers on a car. Don't be surprised when you see this year's model being sold as a used car in the fall with over 75k on the odometer. I paid 1900Euros last year on my car full-coverage. This year I went to compulsory and I'm paying somewhere around 600Euros.

What kind of car do you drive?

I put that on my car one way to work so I'm still not convinced. Honestly I'm not really interested in a pissing contest. If you guys drive more then so be it.

How many people do you really think are putting that many miles on a car in a year? Be serious now.

I have 2 friends that drive just shy of 500 km round trip to work each day. I know some others that drive a lot as well but I'm not sure exactly how much. These guys have to cross the entire Bay Area in California and go all the way up to Sacramento or a bit farther north. It's insanity as far as I'm concerned. Even I wouldn't say that's very common though. It's just a testiment to the outrageous real estate prices here. I wouldn't be surprised if some people commute like that in London but elsewhere I can't believe it's worth it.

My current car is a 2002 SVT Ford Focus. I have no idea what it would be called there or if they even sell them though. For full coverage I used to pay $1500 dollars, but now I'm not sure anymore since it's going to go up due to accidents and the fact that I live in Southern California now which has higher premiums.

We have the Ford Focus here also although I'm not sure about the SVT model. No I dont want to get in a pissing contest with you either.

As far as California is concerned I know what you mean. Damn rush hour! I used to work in Temecula for the Post Office but I also live in Temecula. Took me about ten minutes to get to work.

In Germany, I couldn't say that many people commute that far. I think what they do is if it's that far they just rent an apartment during the week and stay there until the weekend. 500km is like driving daily between Nuernberg to Berlin! That's crazy. I think most Germans put their mileage on vacations. I've heard of people here who drive all the way to Greece.

Ok maybe you're right about the insurance policies and the mileage driven. If you look at it that's ridiculous spending half your life on traffic. At 140kph on the Expressways that can take a mighty long time crossing the Bay area. I know Californians drive faster than say people in Florida. My parents live there and they just aren't in a rush to go anywhere. Sometimes when I go on vacation, I wanna kick my Dad out of the driver's seat and take the wheel myself. LOL !

C'mon dhlucke, gotta admit this was a nice comparison don't you think? Have you ever been to Germany? BTW, I drive a 1995 BMW 318i. It's a small 4-banger but it can go up to 200kph. Only problem is nowadays, you can't drive that fast anymore. The germans started putting speed limits on strategic parts of the Autobahn that as soon as you hit Vmax you have to decelerate again. Sux. Not like when I first bought the car. You could go 15 to 20 minutes at full speed without having to hit the brakes one time. It's fun but expensive. I rarely do it anymore.

Hey, I believe we've been off on a tangent for a while now.

I've been there twice as an adult. Not sure how many times as a kid. I used to speak German as a kid but our family friends moved back to Germany and I forgot it.

I take 3 freeways to get to work and if there's any traffic it will take me about 20 minutes just to get on the first freeway since they have meter lights to get on and these massive lines build up. Then on one of the freeway interchanges there's another metered light and I have to wait another 20 minutes or so.

That SUX big time. I haven't experienced it here yet since 94' but when a mutiple collision occurs on the Autobahn especially when a tractor-trailer is involved that normally means that section of the Autobahn is shutdown for at least 6 hours. The Germans are strict on keeping the highways here clean. Don't blame them at speeds some of these cars travel.

I remember coming home from Frankfurt doing Vmax. 210KPH. I had the Bimmer floored. Not a minute later I 'bout 3 kilometers behind me I see headlights. It was a sweeping bend so I lost it afterwards concentrating on the road ahead. As soon as I cleared the bend the headlights were right behind me but about a second later, it passed. I was still doing 210 on the speedo. Porsche 911 with the retractable wing fully extended. I said SHEEEEEIIIIIIT!!! As if I was standing still. That's one of the fun of driving the Autobahn. Another is I was cruising about 170kph and a german police car was right in front of me. I blinked (left) got on the passing lane and passed him. No one thought anything of it. You wouldn't do that in the States. Everyone just follows the police car like a safety lap. It does have some benefits. And it's fun to drive at that speed. These cars are so stable if you put wings on them I bet they could fly.

No doubt. Only time I've really had that happen to me was driving from L.A. to San Francisco in a Porsche on Hwy 5. We were doing 125 mph and got passed like we were standing still by a Maserati.
