Microsoft hasn't released the date or details for the free replacement offer (yet). XP64 has gone gold, but that's as much as they've told us. However, there is that one detail: XP Pro gets a free copy of XP64, but XP Home DOES NOT get it free.

What's the difference between a pirated and a legitimate copy of XP Pro?

Here's a good question: What apps are out there that have been optimized for 64-bit OS?

Farcry comes straight to mind. I'd assume they'd release it at the same time as the OS.

No it ain't. Wusy gave me the difference. Besides, until everything runs at 64bit, these forums will be flooded with questions.

I told TheChosenOne in one of the threads that the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. Had to specify of course that he could be flamed !

Besides, Mr. Barnes just asked if there are applications out there available for 64bit. Stupid marketing strategy if you ask me. Then again, looking at it from the other side it's actually a good idea.

The first software to be 64bit obviously has to be the OS. Everything else will follow. The beauty of the new OS is that it runs 32bit software as well.

Wusy's answer isn't correct either. A pirated piece of software is one that you stole, while a legitimate one is one that you bought. Generally. With XP there are multiple ways to pirate the software from stealing a corporate version to hacking a regular version into a corporate version. Both of these don't require activation. Either way, if you stole your OS, you pirated it.

If it's 64-bit ... will it run like 32-bit in Safe Mode ... man, that would make defragging a lot quicker ... but I've got another year to wait on another upgrade ...

Just so I don't end up in the crossfire, my software is as legal as the bald eagle.

What if I didn't buy it? What if it was given to me as a gift with all the paperwork up to and including the receipt and packing? Is that still pirated 'cause I didn't buy it myself?

No, that's legal. You have to steal it for it to be illegal.

Another thing you said is interesting. "Stealing a corporate version", now who would be able to steal a corporate version? A corporate employee? Or did someone storm a corporation and went to the MS holy vault and stole the corporate version and handed it out on Internet?

Someone simply took their corporate version, which is a pro version without the registration requirement, and put it on the net. There were 3 corporate versions though. One was a clean rip, one was a "donkey" rip which some had problems with since I believe it was a patched beta copy, and the other was just the files you would need to turn a pro installation into a corporation installation.

I believe the most widely spread version is the first one.

Listen I don't want to discuss this any further.

This is a day-to-day subject and we can't end it. If we were to arrest everyone with a pirated copy, then we'll definitley need a bigger jail and everyone who is caught will make the biggest Union-Strike in every country combined seem like an afternoon cook-out.
