LG VX4600 - Answer On Open?

I'm looking to replace my T720 and am thinking about the VX4600. I was
looking at the online interactive manuals this morning. The "receiving a
call" says to press the send button and does not mention opening the cell
case like my wife's VX4400B. Is this a setable option for the VX4600?

Yes, you can easily set this phone to "answer-on-open".
This is described on pg.119 of user guide which you'd get with the
phone.
You can also download the manual in pdf format.
