Portal 2 FPS

I just installed Portal 2 and I'm getting rather low FPS on all video settings, around 30 FPS on lowest settings and 20 FPS on highest. NVidia optimizer website thinks I should be getting 100 FPS with high settings on my card. I have the latest drivers, defragged HDD, rebooted, and tried some ideas I found via Google such as "verifying integrity of game cache" in Steam. Other games run fine.

Key Specs:
Video: GTX 460 768MB
CPU: i7 @ 2.8GHZ
RAM: 3GB
OS: XP SP3

Thoughts on other ways to fix?

  1. I'd assume it's your video card. Portal 2 being a game from this decade might be too demanding for your GTX 460.
  2. GTX 460 is only a year old. I rebooted again after "verifying cache" and it seemed to correct issue, FPS up to well over 100. Not sure if that's what fixed it.

portal 2 runs on the Source engine which has been around since 2003
  4. The gtx 460 is more than enough to play the game maxed out. does this happen with any other games
