PS3 connect to Auxillary cable for speakers

Hi guys thinking of getting another ps3 and a 24" asus monitor, of which the speakers are terrible. ive got a pair of speakers that have 3.5mm jack inputs and I wanna connect the ps3 to them, the monitor doesnt have any audio output facilities, is there any way of taking the sound from the ps3 and outputting any other way than through a video port? e.g. usb? or using the AV out and only connecting red and white to an aux converter or would that dodge up using the hdmi for video output
