Sound Card problems, need help

I'm trying to install a vortex 2 card on a Asus CUSL2 w/o audio codec. After installing the vortex drivers, I get a error message saying: Vortex is not plugged into the Primary PCI bus slot,.. etc. Game port, wavesinth will not work.

Does anyone know which PCI slot I should use? I've tried slot 1 and 6.

  1. slot 3...but first what OS are you using and what driver set are you using? The vortex is definatly not recomended for windows 2000..get the latest reference drivers here:

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!
  2. This is easy-it has been disabled by the driver, because the driver cannot recognise the PCI bus on 815 chipsets. Copy the driver to a place on your hard drive, use Wordpad to open the au30mmed.inf file, find the section that reads like this:

    [AspenOverides.Addreg]
    ; virtual devices
    ;HKR,Config,DisableJoystick,1,1
    ;HKR,Config,DisableMPU401,1,1
    ;HKR,Config,DisableDOSModemPort,1,1
    ;HKR,Config,DisableSBFM,1,1
    ;HKR,Config,DisableRealModeLegacySBFM,1,1
    HKR,Config,DisableRealModeLegacySBFMUsingREM,1,1
    HKR,Config,DisableSBFMIRQLevel,1,1
    HKR,Config,DisableSBFMIRQSharing,1,1
    HKR,Config,DisableBusDetection,1,1
    ; a3d
    ;HKR,Config,EnableA3DReserve,1,1
    ;HKR,Config,NumHost3DBuffers,1,6
    HKR,Config,Reserve2DSRC,1,8

And remove the semicolon from the front of the line "HKR,Config,DisableBusDetection,1,1"

When you are done, remove the old au30mmed file from the system, remove the card from device manager, and reboot. When windows ask for the driver, point it to the one you coppied to your hard drive with the modified au30mmed file.

Now it works. I would reserve IRQ 5 in BIOS and edit the autoexec.bat line for the SB Emulation to I5 instead of I7 or it may confict with printer port and cause a shut down error.

This fix is verrified with version 2048 of the driver, the last release. I use slot 3 or 4.

  3. Thx for the help Crashman. I'll try this fix sometime tomorrow morning. Sorry about that ncogneto, the driver set is 4.06.2040 and the OS is Win98SE. I can get sound now but I can wait on the SB dos emulation and game port.

Hehe,.. I got some work to do.
