I currently have a Dell Dimension 4100, it has 2 memory slots and the tech specs on the web site says that the most the machine can handle is 512mb. What happens if I try to put in 2 512mb chips in the Dell for a total of a gig ? Will it work ? Is it a limit on the motherboard.
I was just looking on Dell's site real quickly. It appears that the Dimension 4100 is an 815E chipset based motherboard. So, basically you are limited to only 512 MB of RAM. It's not by Dell's design, it's actually by Intel's chipset design.
I have an Asus CUSL2 motherboard which has an 815E chipset as well, so I'm stuck with the 512 MB of RAM barrier. It's not a big deal, though. You will hardly ever need 1 gigabyte of RAM, not unless it's a server. Plus, if you're using Windows 95/98/ME, then you're pretty much stuck with the OS limitation of 512 MB of RAM, anyway.
