Microsoft Update shows a new update released
July 20, 2005 for the HP Laserjet 2300 series
printer PCL5e driver for Windows XP, 10MB in size.

What is it supposed to improve over the latest
(Sep. 2003) driver from HP, 3MB in size? There
is no meaningful description that I found.

Is it worth downloading and installing, for
a user with a direct parallel connection?
Previous Laserjet 2300 series drivers that
I tried from Microsoft were semi-disasterous.

Russell;
Generally you should get drivers directly from the hardware manufacturer.
If your printer is functioning OK, you probably do not need the driver.
Check with HP for details of their drivers.

My recommendation for drivers is to always use the ones on the
manufacturers' web sites. Usually, the drivers on Microsoft Update are
older than what the manufacturer has already revised and posted.
