Can i use an external hard drive instead of the ps3 one

the green light is on. getting the cannot start, the correct hard disk was not found..., on my 40gb ps3. if i understand things correctly, the standard "push the button to power on, then hold-it, power off and power on and wait for the double beep" system access won't work for me. is this a hdd issue? could i just use a 160gb external hard drive retrofitted to fat32 and have success? Is there a flash drive program that will allow me to by-pass the real problem in my ps3? Any help would rock!

The hard drive is most likey dead. Luckily Sony made it really easy to replace the internal hard drive. Check out youtube for some good videos on replacing the drive.

Stick with the 5400rpm laptop drives as the 7200rpm drives may create too much heat.

Where can i find one of these and how much can i expect to pay for it? Is this the most likely culprit? What, in your estimation, are my chances of replacing the hdd with one from the computer store and having the ps3 WORK?

As long as the light is green and not red or yello, I think the ps3 is fine. This is the hard drive I used to replace the 80gig that came in mine.

Any 2.5" laptop drive should work. Some of the new large capacity drives like 1Tb drives may be too tall. Also, use a drive that is sata2 (3gb/s).
