OK, if this is blatently posted elsewhere and should be completely obvious to me, I apologize. I was just trying to figure out when we could expect a consumer 64 bit version of Windows.

What? Gonna leave me hanging without even a clue as to where or how aren't ya?
and you didn't really say if it's "released and available" just that you have it.

Are you sure you have XP 64 bit? or is it 2003 server, which of course is 64 bit as well? Maybe they're the same, but I was of the impression that there was the 2003 server and also a new 64 bit version of XP coming (longhorn or whatever the new one will be called). And maybe those are all very different entities.

A LEGAL gold version of Windows x64 (as they're calling it) will be launched on Monday April 25th at the WinHEC conference in California. Sometime not too long after that, Windows Server 2003 64-bit will be released.

I plan to wait the few days for the legal version, since Microsoftis going to offer the x64 version for FREE to owners of a legal Win XP Pro license.

How would they know if the person downloading the 64bit has a legal copy of XP?

That's easy seeing as my title is ADDICT . My only problem then is the lie detector. I just can't tell the truth!

Maybe they'll let me download 50%... damn, I still end up with 32-bit. :frown:

What log have YOU been living under? Of course if you don't HAVE a LEGAL copy of XP, then you'd never know that they have an online tool that checks to see if your copy is genuine. No legal copy = no x64 Windows.

Looks like I will have to pay if I want it:
http://https://microsoft.productorder.com/clientx64/default.aspx
I built my machine and have an OEM copy of Pro purchased before March 2003.

In order to be eligible to receive Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition, your computer must have been ordered between March 31, 2003 and July 31, 2005 with Microsoft Windows® XP Pro (32 Bit) preinstalled.

In addition, you must read and agree to the following:
By participating in this program, your 32-bit version of Windows® XP Professional will no longer be licensed.
The installation of Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition requires you to format your hard drive. You must back up your files and settings prior to the installation or they will be erased. Microsoft is not liable for any loss of data as a result of this installation.
Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition requires 64-bit hardware drivers (32-bit drivers are not supported). Drivers for 64-bit Windows are created at the discretion of hardware manufacturers and may not be available for some of your hardware components.
For the purposes of the End User License Agreement for your existing Windows® XP Pro (32 Bit) software, your installation of this software will be an “Upgrade.”
The installation of Windows® XP Professional x64 Editions will void any support with your PC manufacturer. One free support call will be provided by Microsoft for any installation-related issues. Additional calls to Microsoft support will be available on a pay-per-incident basis.
Cost for shipping and handling of upgrade is $12.00 USD for domestic shipments and $22.00 USD for International shipments plus any applicable taxes.

I think its total bullsh*t that they arent selling it at stores. I just built a 64 bit system and would pay for a Legal copy of it. I am not giving up my 32 bit license just yet knowing how buggy Microsh*ts products are from the start.

It was a joke Mr. Tree!

Besides, if you look at _WW_'s post, if what he states is true then I'm not eligible either. My XP Pro CD was bought after I bought my system. Just like my SuSE Linux 8.0 Professional was bought after I bought my system. My original PC that I bought with a Windows OS (98SE german version) pre-installed was a Fujitsu-Siemens. Since then I've upgraded from MSI, to DFI, to ECS to my current system. I believe Gigabyte was somewhere between DFI and ECS but that was a long time ago.

FYI, the log I'm lying under come to think of it... are you missing any trees in your yard?

This OS release has got to be the worst one yet. I haven't seen anything related to drivers let alone the purchase of the OS. I guess Microsoft can't afford to advertise.

Heh heh...messed up is an understatement.

Just to review...a few other highlights:

One free support call will be provided by Microsoft for any installation-related issues. Additional calls to Microsoft support will be available on a pay-per-incident basis.

This is typical Microsoft coming out with a new OS.

Too many Microsoft influenced variables!!!

Guess I'll stick to my 32-bit for a while.

Tried to fix the link in my earlier post but for some reason it wouldn't work.

AHH, so you have no idea if it's installable, workable, or even non corrupt, huh?

Has anyone actually installed this bad boy? It does seem to have a really high risk/reward factor.

There are nforce4 drivers and ati catalyst drivers. That pretty much takes care of me. I think I still need monitor drivers though, but couldn't find any, and am not certain they are necessary.

It's to stop all those poor people who simply can't afford to spend $5. Microsoft is only catering to the rich people who can spend $5 at the drop of a hat. The nerve of them.

If you can't afford $5 then you probably should go and get a job. Oh wait, I forgot that you're going to wait 5 years before getting one.
