arguing over the internet is like playing in the special olympics, Even if you win you're still retarded.

Arguing is futile face-to-face as well. What's the point, to change the opinion of another (set-in-their-way) adult? I have yet to see a winner in an arguement at anytime. I do definitely agree with you, especially in the case of an internet flame war.

Hello?

I have a photoshopp that goes with that line. You've obviously seen it.

And yes. It's true.

jc14all: No. There are some "adults" which are open minded enough to either change, or compromise.

Seriously here. Does the name "Yitzak Rabin" ring a bell with anyone?

Exactly! When one person changes their mind to either accept/ignore another's opinion instead of argue...then there is no arguement. The prize goes to the latter.

It is kind of sad, to think about the existence of argumentative discussions, or debates.
I say this because, although the theoretical outcome they have you beleive is that your goal is to change another one's mind.
Sadly, just how many debates do end like this?
It does prove at the same time, that there are a lot who are close-minded, especially in a case where you are right.
Then there are those where you probably can never extract an answer out of, so why even debate it?
Things like "the death penalty" or "censorship". There's simply no way to convince one of x side in these, as their beleifs are much different. It's a topic this year which has me left with a dry mouth on debating.

"then there is no arguement"

Noooooooooo.

There is an arguement. And many times it leads to some big ass brawl.

And then things settle down. And one idiot realizes that it's a stalemate, and like all real stalemates, until something changes, there can be no progress.

So, a compromise is reached. Usually this is a trade-off of "prosepective profits" that each side believes it can gain. It's like, getting rid of all your d6 and swapping them out for d20.

It's still a gamble. But it's a different gamble now. About this time, someone gets shot, which brings you right back to the stalemate.

Personally, I gamble for sexual favors. Either way, someone's winning. And someone always gets "shot", if you know where the G-Spot is.

But that's just my little world...

There is nothing wrong with taking a defense against a personal belief as long as during debate the persuasion does not backfire into a personal attack peppered with name calling and aggressive behavior.

Mature reasoning has a limit. Whenever that limit is reached the matter can be resolved by lot, or so to speak, by vote. This is in regard to matters of governing the masses, but at the personal level mature reasoning does not end a friendship, but it may stifle a relationship without the bitterness.

I know passions run deep, but strength of character is developed by a process of controlling one's ownself through knowing when to speak and when to hold the tongue without allowing the tongue ruling their life. Self-control, patience, discipline, and respect are essential element needed in debates. Unfortunately, when these are absent, debate becomes bitter and resentful. Wars are started from within the heart and mind of wreckless self-centered humanity.

LOL! A brawl is unneccesary, and eliminating the opposition doesn't make a resolution, but only inflames the matter. Arguing with an angry person is a lose-lose situation. To argue or not to argue is a personal choice. If someone chooses not to argue, "then there is no arguement". Same goes for resentment, it is a personal choice. Have you ever known of a good war/a bad peace? Wars will continue until humanity learns to share.

Just like children must learn to share, but some grow old and never quite get it.

"Have you ever known of a good war/a bad peace? "

Hmmmmmm.

There were like, these 30 housewives in Kenya or something that stormed (literally) the local police station a few years back.

They demanded either the cops jail all of their husbands (who got drunk at the local pub after work), or the cops make love to every single housewife. I dunno how many cops there were, but I'm thinkin the girls outnumbered them 3 to 1. Needless to say, it would have been wikked.

Anyways, I dunno how it ended up. Probably some tear gas.

As for the other:

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the age of light, it was the age of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair..."

All we can do is, respect the rights of our fellowman, understand ourselves, and make the best of life in our little world. Life is a series of choices no matter which way we look at it.

Everything has a beginning, and everything has an end. It's all about how we choose to start a day and continue to process those choices throughout, that determines how that day ends (empty/fulfilled). We can choose freely whatever path, and either reap the benefits or regret the consequences. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You have helped me refocus my own. Have a great day!

I used to start these huge debates here if you all remember. I brought up all kinds of stuff from the Indians, Israeli and Palestinian situation, to World War 2, and maybe even the retarded American thread as of late. I don't think we accomplished anything. It was fun though. Nonetheless, one side thinks one thing, and the other something else. I don't think anyone ever changed their mind. Ever....

If I remember correctly you got into a huge debate about your religious beliefs and got no where.

Lets not even start on AMD vs Intel.

It's very difficult to have a constructive debate. We try, but it's hard. Once it gets into an argument though, it's tough to get back to a constructive debate if not impossible.

Look at the .9r=1 debate. That thread will never die. I don't know if there can ever be any constructive debate again, only argument.

Unfortunatly guys this is my case. I try to prove to my physics teacher I may be right about my exam question and that I deserve the extra point for an unclear or unrestrictive question. I used my method to get the same result as others, but our teacher is hard headed, so it takes over the entire class and a french teacher to prove him to change his mind, and that was once succesful for the previous exam, not the last one where I was alone in this fight.
I might post the scanned image of the question so you might see why I think I am right.
Granted, everyone's like: Oh you got 85, don't tell me you're not satisfied?

I tell them it's not about the extra 2%, it's about principle and right.
Sadly indeed, you cannot win arguments when people don't listen. It's even more annoying as this is always the case with us teens or even kids. We can be right but adults will never listen, except some...

I think that people reach a point in their lives when they forget that there's still more to learn. We get so self-absorbed that our egos tell us that we MUST be right, about virtually everything.

The other factor is that we have the tendency to take opposing opinions personally. If someone disagrees with us, we consider it a personal affront, instead of merely their point of view.

If we could stop taking people's viewpoints personally, it would be a lot easier to debate/discuss issues. I am not my opinions, as they can, and often do change. When I am attached to my point of view and think that it defines me, that is when I find trouble.

My 2 cents.

Thats true, except in how one defines the difference between knowledge and wisdom.

As far as knowledge, I agree with you.

A servey was done to see what varios age groups have recently learned.

A 3 yr old " I learned that the stove is hot, and its better not to touch it"

A 5 yr old " I've learned that if you dont feed the fish, they will die"

A 13 yr old " I've learned that Gagarin was the first person to walk the moon"

A 17 yr old " I've learend that love hurts"

A 27 yr old " I've learned that my kids are making my mistakes! "

A 45 yr old " I've learned that money doest bring happines"

A 99 yr old " I've learned that I still have a lot to learn"
