Personally use Ad-aware, and find it works great and it's FREE!

MS Antispyware is free also

I just started using Ad-Aware again. It's free (if you get the personal edition), and works good. If you want you can get the "Plus" or "Professional" versions, for a charge of course, which I've never used.
I used Spybot S&D for a long time, but IMO, Ad-Aware is better right now. I say that because I can use them back to back, and Ad-Aware always catches something that Spybot missed.
I've never used MS Antispyware, but I've heard alot of good things about it, and it's free too, so it can't hurt to try it.

I agree with RichPLS on this. I have used Adware (free version) in the past and it was fine. However, the MS product (which is the result of MS buying GIANT antispyware) is much more full featured. It has real time protection and an auto-update feature (liek anti-virus update) that basically fulfill all my anti-spyware needs.
One drawback however. The free download has a lifetime. It may be 6 months or there abouts. I haven't researched what will happen then but the message embedded in the product that does the countdown states "Contact Microsoft to get an updated version". That smells like a potential purchase in the future. They bait you with a very good beta (which this is BTW) and set the hook. Then they figure you are now willing to pay the price.
We'll see. It is a good product though.

We've found that if you use Spybot and Ad-aware together, they get just about everything. One get's the few things that the other misses, they're a good compliment.

OK great tips,

I will try them out ,

It would be great if someone made an all-round spy ware killer program that takes care of everything and doesn't miss out on anything, this way seems endless nontheless...

thanks a lot

I haven't used Spybot but the last time I used Ad-Aware (free version) it didn't have a capability to schedule a scan. Its a small thing to remember to run the tool every once in a while but I find that having auto-update and scan scheduling does make life easier as well as making sure you catch the bad stuff more often. Nevermind what I said if you can schedule either.

I've been using the beta version of Microsoft's Antispyware. It updates everyday, it's nice. I haven't actually used it to remove anything yet, so I can't say whether it works or not..

It used to be a program called "Giant" but Microsoft bought it out for their own evil doings..

A suite of antispyware programs is definitely the best thing to use. All of the above (MS Antispyware, Ad-Aware SE Personal, and Spybot S&D) will be a good combination. I would also recommend adding SpywareBlaster to your line of defense. SpywareBlaster does not actively scan the drives for installed spyware to delete. Instead, it serves as a "shield," like a firewall, but against adware/spyware. This, too, is freeware.

One other product that I have found to work extremely well is CounterSpy. This one uses the same engine MS Antispyware uses. The company that developed this software is Sunbelt Software. They were actually partnered with Giant, hence the same engine. CounterSpy basically uses the same features seen in MS AntiSpyware, but has some additional features. One that I particularly like is it accesses the startup program listing (as in MSCONFIG) and lets you enable or disable each item. This feature is available in both programs. Additionally, when you highlight one of those items, and you have no idea what it is, CounterSpy gives you the information. Information about all spyware objects found are also available within the program while managing the quarantine section.

CounterSpy is trialware, and you have 15 days to evaluate the product. I gave it a try and was thoroughly impressed...as was PC World. If you purchase the product after the 15 days, it's $20 for one year. To renew for each additional year, it's $10 (per year). Not bad.

Free prgms: Spybot, Ad-Aware SE, SpywareBlaster & Spyware Guard, and M$ Antispyware (Beta 1) ... all free, and not a big drain on resources ... I'd suggest you learn how to configure Spybot in Advance Mode - go to some good security forums ... this forum ain't it (I know) ...
