Hi All
I have just joined this site but dont need any help atm so i thought i would say hiya to everyone.
I am no expert but have built 4 systems so far so may be able to help others but i do need advice now and again myself hence i decided to join you lot.
If your interested or have any sugestions my currant rig is
Antec 1200 gamers case
XFX 790ultra mobo with an E8600 cpu,
4Gb OCZ sli cert 1800Mhz ddr3 ram(2x2),
2x XFX GTS250, 1045mb g/cards (couldnt afford the 3rd one)
Jeantec Modular 650w psu
320Gb WD raptor as main hard drive
2x 400GB Hitachi hard drives for storage
I run Xp pro 64 bit for my sins
Dont know if ive put this in the wrong place but hey im sure no one will mind me saying hiya all.
Oh one question would a 3rd graphics card realy inprove my system that much IE is it worth me doing?

well my fav games are the total war series playing (or was tilll the patch killed it) empire total war
Resaloution is 1680x1050
Yes that sugestion would be nice ie one better card but im a disabled family man on limited income (state benifits) if i was still able to work im sure i would have an i7 with latest g/cards etc by now
I can get anothe 250 for less than £90
oh ps How do i get the frame rates for you not something ive ever done
"Edit" oh and i didnt know you could mix diff g/cards in sli config thought you had to have matching cards so something learnt allready

- Mixing different cards in SLI/Crossfire is not usually wise as they will all essentially reconfigure themselves to match the config of the slowest card.
- Single cards are most efficient, dual SLI being slightly less efficient (you don't get twice the performance of one card), and triple SLI even less efficient (you won't get 1.5 times the performance of 2 cards). Basically what I'm saying is adding a 2rd card will make little difference.
- Not sure if your cards are 1024MB each or 2*512MB, but the usable video memory is equal to that of your worst card, they are not added together so adding a 3rd card will not add any video memory.
- For about £90-100 you could get a 1GB 4850 or 1GB 5750, which should outperform 2, or even maybe 3 GTS 250 cards:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-Sapphire-HD4850-PCI-...
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-ASUS-HD5750-PCI-E-20...
- Another idea might be to just put the £90 you have to one side and start saving up a bit more for a better card, like a 1GB 5850 (currently £220 but might drop below £200 once you've saved up):
http://www.scan.co.uk/Index.aspx?NT=1-0-94-670-0
- Also with the two options above you could sell the old cards on eBay, should get £50+ each for them, so you could factor that into the equation.
- Also work noting that a 5000-series card will save of electricity.

You're obviously a gamer as you've gone to the SLI w/raptor rig. Your weak spot are your twin GPUs, 256 bit cards. At your resolution, a cheaper, cooler, quiter solution is a single GTX 275 or HD 4890 which will give about the same performance, maybe slightly faster. A better question is how to improve your system, not whether you should add a 3rd card which IMO would be a complete waste other than for the appearance factor than only a noob would appreciate (no offense but no one should be allowed to have a 3rd card, it's so unfriendly to the environment.

Ok thanks guys
3 way SLI is not worth the money or power so it would not inprove my hardware config,
Devastator
Your advice is welcome and appreciated but i realy dont do ATI/AMD had bad experiances with ATI and ive allways been a intel man, the cards are 1024mb each.

Yes guilty gamer here,
I did get the 250's without doing much if any reasearch but i didnt have a great deal of choice either i got them direct from xfx in there clearance shop @ the same time as the 790Ultra (had my eye on one for a while). Basicly it was the 250's or 9 series cards they had availible the two g/cards and the mobo came to just under £250 so i dont think i did to bad with them. I certianly thought the new mobo deserved better than my 8600GT Fatal1ty's
With what you guys have said i will be thinking of upgradeing the grapics cards in the new year. With xmas money off the mrs and mum i could prob stretch to the £218 for a XFX 1024Mb nVidia GeForce GTX 285. from what you said i assume this would be faster on its own than the 2x 250's

What ATI card did you have before, some older ones did have crap drivers?
It's also worth knowing that the chips are made by the same company. It is possible that card was of poor quality, for instance I purchased 12 Abit (X700) cards and 12 Sapphire (X700) at the same time, and all the Abit ones developed faulty fans after about a year, but all the Sapphire ones still work now (about 5-6 years later), I've had lots of Sapphire ones and never had a single issue.
Also XFX do ATI/AMD cards as well as nVidia, if you prefer/trust that brand. The reason i mention this is that the 5850 is better than the GTX 285 in every respect, especially on the higher graphics settings.
But it is up to you, that's just my advice.

Ok yes you have read me like a book lol,
You have me attention now as im not stuck in my ways and allways wiling to learn, just not throw good money after bad.
2x Bgf agp x8 9600's, the one that they replaced, i cnat rember the model just it was ATI agpx8 card. Ive only realy got into tinkering with PC's since i became disabled didnt pay that much attention back then, had Dell's no fun no intrest.
Would the ATI cards work well with the rest of my hardware tho?

You wouldn't be able to crossfire (multiple ATI GPU's) on your motherboard but a 5850 is a better card than the GTX285 by some way. I am an Intel/Nvidia user too, but there is nothing wrong with ATI cards at all, in fact they are in front by some way at the moment. Either that or you could get the GTX285 and use a single GTS250 for physx.....although no DX11 support.
Do you overclock at all? You're wasting that E8600 if you're not!

No i Dont OC yet i dont think im that confident, Like i said ive not paid much attention to computers till 3-4 years ago. I was a construction worker, i cant build houses so im learning to build computers. im competent with doing what i need to in bios to get a good stable platform after the build now.
Yeh i kind of would like DX11 support as i thinking of geting windows 7 next year.

A DX11 card will soon be the only choice to get, with the release of more DX11 games. I am sorry to hear about your disability, building computers is often fun though, and you're always learning new stuff! With regard to overclocking the E8600 - 4Ghz should be easily attainable, and depending on the cooler and chip, 4.4Ghz or higher may be possible.
PS. Download a program called FRAPS to monitor frame rates in-game. Rivatuner can be used to overclock your graphics cards.

True, but 10,000 parcels suddenly got delivered by FedEx, crime rates in Liverpool rocketed, roads across Birmingham were miraculously repaired. Just think of the good that closing the other really did.... then look at the Irish economy. Bet Wingy wishes he still had Riser to rely on for Financial guidance....

. But i will note that your question wasnt being nice either it was designed to Take the mickey out of someone a little greener than myself! I mean come on we all know you would have had a good laugh at my expence if I had said yes, maybe just maybe my reply should have been "Ha-ha yeh right".Mugz, do I call people names? No it’s childish. Do I say/insinuate derogatory things about other people in my posts or threads that have nothing to do with the thread you are referring to? No it’s childish. Oh hang on I don’t even do that in the thread when I’m being called names and having derogatory things said to me (unjustifiably)! Please do the same for me or I may just not be able to hold my tongue!
To answer your question tho well OFC that all depends on the context and you bringing it here out of that thread is taking it out of context. I will reserve the right to defend myself or my standpoint if I believe it’s correct, until proven otherwise. I will defend myself or standpoint without name calling or saying/insinuating anything derogatory in most cases about other people on this forum. Even when people are calling me name's saying/insinuating bad things about me!
Think about it your original post in the thread is plain and simple trolling!

Okay, someone's skin's just a little thin...
I ASKED if you identified yourself as a misanthrope, although if I DID call you one then in my view it would be vaguely complimentary, given that a misanthrope is someone who has a low opinion of others. A low opinion of others is justifiable, and in fact plain good common sense. Yes, I myself AM a misanthrope, and for good reason.
And what is the actual difference between an adult and a child? Based on what I've seen to date, puberty.
I guess mine was also an off-the-cuff remark that Hindenburged... although you have bigger problems now, like getting a photo of a cat dry-cleaned, exorcised, and possibly reupholstered, given what my colleague has just done to it.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have a vat of boiling metal that needs my attention.

Ok sorry, yes I am man enough to apologize if I think I am in the wrong
A, I didn’t read your post properly
B, I wasn’t in what you might call a good mood, I sometimes let my depression @ becoming disabled get the better of me, for this I apologize profusely
C, was proving imp human
D, And yes I probably am a misanthrope, having little patience for people who say I’m doing nothing to help but shoot down ideas when in fact I’m the only one that bothered to research the error code of the op posted in the thread I think you are referring to. I mean come on they were all telling the op to re-install the OS when the error code referred to hardware issues the RAM. This is more what i was refering to in my answer to you, the jury hand not made up its mind on your post appart from @ 1st glance it seemed to be trolling.
