Hi,

I am not sure where to ask when it comes to screen resolution. So I am posting under PC gaming, if that is OK because it is somewhat related.

My old 24" LCD monitor has a resolution of 1920x1200. Recently, I was shopping for a new monitor for my wife and the only popular models in my part of the world are those LED 24" 1920x1080 models via HDMI input.

When we compare those two resolutions (playing WoW), it is clear to me that 1920x1200 can see more than a 1920x1080 resolution when we zoom out. Anyone knows why we appear to regress than progress? Also, is 1920x1080 or the 16:9 aspect the new standard for PC gaming (certainly a regression when it comes to playing WoW)? Or are there other high resolution I should have considered?

Cheers.

Basically more sheets of 1920x1080 LCD panels can be cut from the same "glass" than 1920x1200 LCD panels. That means every 12 feet x 8 feet sheet of "glass" can produce more lower resolution LCD panels for more monitors to make more money.

1920x1080 has become popular because they carry a lower price than 1920x1200 and because HDTV has been pushing that resolution as well.

I am located in Singapore. Looks like more monitors these days are manufactured with 1920x1080 spec. You are right, not desirable for PC use.

Popular brands here like Samsung has dropped the 1920x1200 spec.
