I just looked at the prices to upgrade my phone, the every 2 yr deal. Is
verizon nuts?? The cheapest of the cheap phones was 139 bucks, so it would
be 39 bucks for me with the 100 bucks off. They had the motorola 710 listed
at $419.00. Do they really think folks will jump at these prices???

Your $100 comes off the PROMOTIONAL price of the phone.

No - the prices and NE2 is a joke. It's almost better to churn if you don't
like the phone selection.

What? I just looked on the site. Prices with 2 year activation included
5 or 6 that were $100 or less. Some as cheap as $20, a few at $50,
and a few more right at $100. If you are doing the NE2 then you are
talking about 2 year contracts. There are a bunch of phones you could
get for free. How were you figuring it? Or is this just a troll....

Sign in to verizon account, your looking at your bill, to the left in the
window is upgrade phone, select the number, then click upgrade phone and a
list pops up...cheapest phone on this list is 139.95. This is what you get
if you choose not to reup for 2yrs.

That's the important part right there: If you do not sign a new 2
year contract, you get a higher price.

Verizon, like all of the carriers, are selling cellular service first
and phones second. If you contract for a longer term, you get a
subsidized discount on the hardware. If you do not go for the
contract, then you pay a higher price for the hardware because the
carrier cannot be sure that they'll make up the difference in service
fees.

The OP said "I just looked at the prices to upgrade my phone,
the every 2 yr deal.". He was talking about the NE2 ==> 2 year
contract.

Forget about the upgrade button. Just look at all the offered phones
on the web page. Unless something had changed very recently NE2
applies to any phone VZW is carrying and it's an additional $100 off
the 2 year activation price. That would include about 9 or 10 phones
if you include the 3 or so that you would have to pony up ~$20 for.

The problem for me is, what is a new 2-year contract? My contract has
expired, but I am on the National One Rate plan which is no longer
offered. If I sign up for a new contract, I assume I have to sign up
for one of the new plans, and lose National One Rate. Not willing to
do that, so looks like I am up a creek as far as getting a discounted
phone. Appears that my only out is Ebay.

I'm not positive about that although you are probably right.
You certainly can only *change* plans to currently offered
ones. But you are on a plan/contract now. It's just month
to month. You don't need a *new* contract for all the stuff.
You just need to extend your existing contract's termination
date for 2 more years.

If they allow you to do that then they are committed to honoring
that plan for 2 more years so maybe that's their reason not to.
The overwhelming cost would be maintaining old plans in the
billing system. My guess is that the great majority of older plans
make them more money than not.

Have you tried at least a couple of CSRs and maybe a supervisor?
