There is some <font color=blue> <A HREF="http://ragingbull.lycos.com/mboard/boards.cgi?board=AMD&read=81857" target="_new"> bad news</A> </font color=blue> for people who are looking forward to the upcoming nForce chipset.

here here - it doesn't sound good. I was planning on waiting (until my friend wanted to build a computer for school - i'm a nice guy so im helping him build it by selling him my old stuff and i'm buying the new stuff) however something came up so i'm upgrading now. The epox 8k7a+ looks like the one to buy. the abit kg7 doesn't seem that great compared to the epox's features.

here's the breif article.

"NVIDIA nForce to Be Redesigned
July 30th, 2001 8:24 AM - Brandon Hill
Source: x-bit
Category: News

x-bit also has some rather bleak info that NVIDIA's nForce chipset will have to be redesigned along with some feature changes/drops:
Although NVIDIA claimed that they will easily cope with the integrated mainboard chipset since their experience in the graphics field is very rich and they have already dealt with very complicated chips, the things turned out absolutely different. However, during the launching of the first Crush chipset, NVIDIA has already faced some unexpected problems. MCP South Bridge yields turned out much lower than NVIDIA had expected. As a result the cost of the relatively expensive Crush chipsets as a whole was supposed to be very high. That is why according to this info, NVIDIA is now working on the Crush chipset redesign. To tell the truth, the situation turned out so serious that NVIDIA has to alter some of its features. As a result, the final Crush version may differ greatly from the initially announced product."

Yeah, I came here to post that article too...here's the <A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/story.html?id=996491451" target="_new">full</A> thing...

So that leaves us only with the SiS735, Northwood, and Palamino for excitement.

I'd probably still want to wait for more SiS735 boards though before jumping in...

<font color=red>Yeah, I took a crap on your lawn. Whatcha gonna do about it?</font color=red>

ya i'm looking at the gigabyte board GA-7VTX. Also the epox board 8k7a+ ... i think i might go gigabyte. i'm not sure.. it's like a toss up between epox and gigabyte.

My sig is better then your's!

I suspect that the real reason for redesign is that the mobo manufacturers want the chipset to get cheaper. That especially applies to the low-end nForce 220. Hence, removal of certain features.

Hopefully, the high-end nForce 420 won't suffer. A good sign is that nVidia is certain to start samples of the final version in August. That means the boards will likely be out in September, just as expected.

P.S. Epox 8K7A+ is an excellent board, but it seems to require an extreme carefulness from the user when installing. You might find this worth reading:

wow thanks a lot for the post! that pretty much chucks epox out the door. I don't wanna half to desolder my board or whatever ... what crap ya know? lol ... ok so i'm down to two choices then ... and maybe you can give me a hand to chose ...

Gigabyte GA-7DXR or
Gigabyte GA-7VTX

the difference well:

Gigabyte GA-7DXR: uses the AMD 761 chipset (no via drivers needed :) )
Gigabyte GA-7VTX: uses the KT266 chipset and has V-Link

both are practicly the same... but the KT266 supports 3GB of ram and the AMD761 supports 3GB (2GB unregistered doh).

is V-Link worth it? i dunno ...

My sig is better then your's!

Gigabyte is known for making stable boards. However, you might want to ask somewhat more knowledgable, or do some web searches. I haven't been looking into those two boards, so I have no idea if they have any problems or not. They seem to be comparable to me, should you be choosing between them.

This is a rumor only at this point, started on a Raging Bull message board of all places. So, I'd rather wait to see just what it comes out with rather than assuming this to be correct.

If nVidia is releasing their chipset on time, and samples just came out a few months ago, which folks are testing now, I find it a bit hard to believe that nVidia would be able to make such major design changes and still release their chipset on schedule.

When all else fails, throw your computer out the window!!!

Indeed, nVidia's rebuttal of the rumor was quick to come:

i agree ... although it doesn't matter to me right now cos i just bought a new mobo GA-7DXR and don't plan to buy a new one for at least a year (LOL).

we'll shall have to wait and see what comes up...

Do you actually believe what you think?
