On the topic of WarCraft 3 and CD-ROM's, one of the recent patches allows you to play the game without having the disc in the drive, which is pretty cool.
Eh. I have a pirate copy for everyday use, simply because this pirate copy has all the updates and add-ons needed to run DotA well enough (I'm in South Africa as well BTW, playing on Twilight). For legality though I have a copy of the game as well as the expansion. I'm not going to use it though, as the setup and "getting it to work" is simply too much of a hassle.
Oh, and I don't see any issues with using the pirate copy if I did pay for the game. Just personal choice
Soooo many updates (was a huge issue with a capped 384 line), and then you need a new executable file (that red one) or Battle.net won't work lekker. Also, maps. I have 4,000 custom maps on the used game. But I only use 3 of them funny enough, DotA, Fellies: Non-lag Final and Run Kitty Run. And the occasional porn map when the crowd asks.
I think I'll give the legit a go though, I have the connection and cap to do so now.
Yeah the moment you try getting on BNet, you need a new game launcher, one that allows for the correct internet settings and all those stuff. You need a Twilight account (unless you want to play on overseas servers with huge pings) and there's a fairly large update waiting before you can start playing.
I picked up my copies for R129 from Look & Listen about five years ago. Never even installed them once...
