I have line-of-sight between two towers about 3 miles apart. I want to
create a wireless network link between them. Is 802.11a or g preferable for
this situation, or is there a significant difference?

I think 11a is probably preferable.
11a seems to be finding itself deployed more frequently as a back-haul link
these days, IMHO. Although it will be a bit harder to get an 11a signal to
go 3 miles than an 11g signal, it's not unobtainable, and you have the added
benefit of using the less-noisy 5.8Ghz band and having more channels to
choose from.

good luck,
Jonathan
