FPS Issues in multiple games, Cause??

I am having issues with my laptop. Sometimes I can run games on full settings no fps issues, no lag, just fine. For some reason, my computer starts running with terrible FPS though, and I can't figure out what's wrong.

Main game for concern is Vindictus, noticed it happening with Mabinogi as well.

At first I thought the issue was with my internet connection, but right now I have about 10mb/s via speedtest.net tests for my download, so I don't know what to think right now. I was also seeing stuff about people thinking skype could cause this? But I'm not sure, sometimes I can restart my computer and not open skype to have my game run fine, but that might be irrelevant.

My specs:

Dual Core 2.66 processor
4gb RAM
130m GT Geforce gfx card

The game only takes about 50% of my CPU, physical memory isn't all used up, yet I cannot for the life of me manage to get it to run smoothly for a long period of time right now.

I've cleaned a lot of programs off my computer, defragged my drive, scanned for viruses, cleaned my registry via CCleaner, and yet the problem continues. I should note perhaps that it doesn't matter what video setting I run the games at, the framerate remains unchanged.

Any ideas?

Make sure drivers are up to date, make sure temps are looking good.

Pretty sure drivers are up to date, as the windows update has always done that for me for my laptop, how would I go about checking temps for the laptop?

I have never had windows update graphic drivers for me...

I use MSI Afterburner to keep track of my gpu temps, and Core Temp to keep track of cpu temps.

post a dxdiag, you can do this by clicking start and typing dxdiag in search bar. Press enter save all information and copy+paste here.

First, you might not want to let Windows update your video drivers, you should do it yourself, on the producer's website. For checking your CPU temperatures, there's CoreTemp and MSI's Afterburner for GPU.

Usually laptops run pretty hot under stress, I have been there as I have used a 8800GT Nvidia card in an Acer machine which would run very hot while gaming on it, so if that's your case as well, you should look for a cooling pad.

Which should i be looking at for Afterburner? The benchmark?

Indeed...

Will update my graphics driver and be back in a bit, as far as my possible network idea for slowing me down, 183mb in 23 seconds.. yay college internet.

Benchmark? Is that Afterburner or Kombuster?

Afterburner should have bars on left side(Core voltages, Core clock, Shader clock, Memory clock, Fan speed) which you dont need to touch and on right side should be a graph and the top one should be GPU Temperature.

Updated my graphics drivers, didn't see a noticable difference in my FPS.

Afterburner is reading 80 C on my GPU, that doesn't sound all that high does it?

The temp reading for the GPU, is it under stress? Cause if it's idle, that's a bit high, I think.

I don't know about stress, but that's after 2 restarts directly after closing my game, then reopening it immediately upon getting up again. It's at 82 now, maxed at 83 when I opened a second game to see if that one was any different.

Edit: 78 atm with closed game.
Edit 2: 75 lol.

Can you audibly hear the GPU fan kicking in as your temperature is rising? Like going up a notch? Also, you should let it rest for a bit, 5 minutes or so, fire it up and without running any game, do a GPU temp reading, and after that, trying playing the game for a while and do a temp reading again and compare.

Yes I can audibly hear my fan turn up when it's trying hard, but I've never had framerate drop from that. Overheating? Yep, happened a few times over the years, but never frame drop.

I keep coming back to this being connection related somehow.. I can't get a 5bar connection in my game even when I am the host, if someone else is hosting I get 1-2 bars, it's so bizzare.

80c idle is very hot, keep games closed and see how far it goes down to if it stays around 80c then open game play for a little bit and if its reach mid 80's+ after just a couple minutes of gameplay then there is something wrong.

If the temps are indeed the issue try to click the restore factory default button in msi afterburner and get a cooling pad.

Also get a canned of compressed air and try to clean out your laptop the best you can... Dust might be blocking airflow or something...

It hasn't gone above 80 at all, I've been on my game the whole time. Framerate is still bad though.

August 30, 2011 6:47:24 AM

There is no temperature change with the game open and closed? Above you said with game closed temps were 75-78 idle?

Also, when you installed drivers did you do a clean install or just express install it? If you just did express install then re-install the driver using custom install and click the clean install box.

I had a FPS problem from updating from 275.33 to 280.26 by doing express install and had to clean install it and worked fantastic.

There is a temp drop of about 5 or so from a few mins of not having my game up, but it really isnt very resource intensive. I can run WOW at max settings with no frame issues and then it starts warming up, but right now.. not a big change on heat.

Edit: I did custom and clean install for my drivers, forgot to add that.

Yes to the monitor, no to the resolution. Since I reinstalled my drivers its just set to have the same resolution as my laptop, and I haven't changed it.

It seems really odd that your gpu temp stays that high idle but doesn't go up much further while gaming...

Cards usually idle around 30-50c from my experiences... yours idles hotter than mine gets while under load, but your temps don't get much hotter while under load... Gives me a headache to think about...

With the game closed see how much % of the gpu is being used in afterburner.. it should be nearly nothing, like 1%

GPU has been at like 0-6 since I closed it a while ago, the temp has lowered to 70-72 from 80.

Try to switch off the energy saving feature of your gpu, also disable aero when you game.

Energy saving feature? Where would that be?

And it seems from what I can tell, to not be an issue in games that I only connect to the server and am not hosting anything of my own. That doesn't make too much sense to me though, since playing by myself in those games I still have low fps. Warcraft and ragnarok I have on my computer and those run just fine.

You find that in your gpu control gui provided by nvidia, i think. I have amd for a while since the HD 2xxx series so I am not very familiar with nvidia controls.

No, make the detail level to performance instead of quality and select override games setting (if you have that option). Turn energy saving off, not on.

Bump, I turned off my computer for a while while I went to get food, turned it back on and it seems to work for now, it seems to do that sometimes. I played a very graphically intensive game for a while, all the time I had afterburner going. My temp range is 63-97, so I may need to find a way to cool my system. For some reason, it went from 65-75 just while I typed this message, not sure what's going on there.
The GPU usage % went from 0-98 while I played, so I suppose that game is pushing my computers limits a bit when it's on maxed graphics.

I still want to know exactly what causes my games to all the sudden be bogged down in slow. It's a very sudden change. In the music game I was playing, just from one song to another it went from perfect to crap. Could it be that the GPU just stops trying at some point?

97c is way out of my comfort zone... That's reaching pretty unsafe temps and it might underclock itself in order to attempt to try to cool down to prevent damage.

Get a cooling pad and caned air and clean out your laptop the best you can is my advice. Dust buildup can prevent airflow which laptops already have problems with. So you need to make sure it stays as clean as possible.

A lot of times when it underclocks due to overheating it wont go back to original clock speed for a while or until you restart or if you restore factory defaults manually.

Also, try to feel, with the palm of your hand which part, under laptop's keyboard heats up, it is empirical but it could give an idea as well. And I think also your HDD might get pretty hot too, seeing how your CPU and GPU are not able to handle all that heat. At least on my Acer machine, when it got hot, it went all the way, and that means GPU, CPU and the two HDD's inside.

Just like it was mentioned before, open it up, blow the dust off with a can of dry compressed air, check the heatsink of your GPU, make sure there are no dust bunnies in there. Also, gingerly, with lot of care, take a look at your GPU inside the case, also try carefully to clean its fan too. It works wonders, I've been there.

A good cooling pad, regular dust cleaning could help here; also don't try to use any "energy saver"-type profiles while playing and of course, have it plugged in when gaming (I remember once I started playing World of Warcraft on battery... it didn't really work too well.)

Sorry for the block of text, didn't say really much of what hasn't already been said, am just trying to help.

How would I go about dust cleaning the laptop? I don't feel overly comfortable opening it up, or is that a safer idea than i think it is?

And I suppose I'll try looking into a cooling pad, but it only feels slightly warm to the touch in the area that the heat exhaust is on the bottom.

Don't worry, as long as you don't apply mechanical force on the components inside the laptop's case, you're good. On the back of your laptop's case, you'll find screws that keep some plastic lids in place, covering most of the laptop. Usually there's one lid, and when you unscrew it, it'll give you access to your video card and HDD's, maybe even CPU, memory sticks, depending on the model.

There's a guide here on how to do that, and believe me, it's easier than it sounds, as long as you're careful. If your notebook is still under warranty though, then I suggest you take it to an authorized repair center, as opening your case might void your warranty.

As for the cooling pad, it really does its job, you might want to read some reviews about that.

Pretty much what eldd said, read guides on your laptop, be gentle, don't be dumb and like wear socks scoot on carpet and start touching your laptop parts, because... well duh of course it could cause a spark lol...
