Windows 7 problems with internet

Hey!
I have windows 7 on my laptop and i am connected to the internet through a router connected to my house computer. I can do anything online however downloading things like java and Skype is giving me trouble because it says i am not connected to a network. I've been researching this problem for days and i cant find anything to help me fix this problem.
