Hi... Hopefully some of you can help me with this.
I'm having a problem with my homebuilt system. It seems like it may be a motherboard problem. I have basically 2 problems.
The first is, that after shutting down the computer, it will spontaneously power itself back ON. I've disabled all wake on x settings, and even removed the wake on lan cable to rule that out. I shut down windows normally, and the computer shuts off normally, but then after a few seconds, it powers on as if I had hit the power button. I've noticed this mostly happens either after changing bios settings, or having a windows crash. After either, I'll reboot normally, but then windows won't load (see 2nd problem), and I'll have to power down, which leads into this problem.
The other problem, which usually is a result of this one ( but sometimes not), is that when starting back up, the computer will hang at the loading windows logo, with the hard drive LED glowing steadily, or not at all. It takes several power downs and start ups until I can get windows to load properly, and once it does, the computer works as normal.
My system specs are as follows:
Case: Enlight 7237 w/ 300 Watt powersupply
CPU: AMD Duron 1.33 GHz
Hard Drive: IBM Deskstar 40 GB; 7200 RPM
Memory: 256 MB Crucial CAS 2
Motherboard: Abit KT7A
Network Card: Linksys LNE100TX
Sound Card: Guillemot GameTheater XP
Video Card: Visiontek Geforce3 64 MB
If you have any idea, please let me know, I'm desperate!
At this point I would try a modified BIOS, not a beta but a modified final release. You can find some at Binary's BIOS Mods. The "modifications" simply consist of re-enabled features that have been disabled in the official versions of the BIOS.
The mod that I think will help you is the ability to disable ACPI. I think this may solve your 1st problem.
If you don't feel comfortable with a BIOS modified by someone unknown then I seem to recall that there is a utility available that will allow you to do the mod yourself.
For extra safety, you can also purchase a device called BIOS Savior which is basically a hardware backup device for your BIOS ROM.
Thanks alot for responding.
I am somewhat uncomforatable using a modified bios, whether or not I do it myself. I will probably pick up one of those Bios Saviors and then try it, as I don't really feel like screwing up my motherboard
...by the way I'm running the modified 3R BIOS on my KT7. I needed it to disable ACPI for stability during overclocking. (At least I'd like to think it helps).
