how to know file extension?

Hi, is there a way of knowing what the file extension of a file is in winxp? Is there a way to toggle the view so that the file extension is displayed?

Open My Computer then click on Tools in the menu bar at the top. Select Folder Options, then the View Tab. Scroll down until you see "Hide extensions for known file types" and uncheck the box.

I also did it, but sitll the file shows no extension. I've also checked in DOS prompt but it only shows long name.
