RAM limitations, netbook, WIN 7 starter

I installed a 2gb PC3-8500 DDR3 204 pin stick in my HP Mini 210-1170, and the result was a black screen, though it seemed the computer was running.

I noticed the prior stick was PC3-10600.

The product specs state a 1gb RAM limit, but WIN 7 homesite clearly states 2 GB max.

Can anyone tell me why? Do I need the 10600, or is there some sort of "governor" set by HP?

  1. I don't know what's your exact model of the 1170 is, there are a few variations, but according to HP they support 1 gig MAX.

Windows 7 does not control how the hardware works. If your hardware is limited to 1 gig, Windows can't change that.

If you can, return the RAM.
  2. I agree with hang-the-9. If your netbook states a 1gb of RAM limit, then you will not be able to go beyond that. Windows 7 Starter will run just fine with 1gb of RAM -http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/system-requirements
