hp g85 gimp or cups printing from Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger - ho..

I just got a snazzy new ibook with tiger pre-installed, and I wanted to
spare myself the horror of dealing with HP's bloated drivers for talking
to this printer over the network.

We've got the G85 sitting on a jetdirect 300x. So I can use the web
jetdirect's web interface if I ever want to scan.

I've investigated using both GIMP and HPIJS. HPIJS has a G85 specific
printer profile, while GIMP will print to the G85 using the pcl-900 driver.

I'm all about using less ink and printing faster, and I'd like to set it
up to print in draft mode. I'd expect to see this ability to change to
draft mode in "printer setup", "installable options" or somewhere else,
but I'm not seeing it anywhere.

My dad is using HPIJS on his quicksilver g4 running 10.3.x panther, and
he has an additional drop down menu at the print dialog that allows him
to change all sorts of printer settings, including choosing draft mode.

did I somehow botch the install? or is 10.4 perhaps not allowing GIMP
and HPIJS to tweak the print dialog with this drop down options menu?
