Can I plug my 64-bit PCI cards into the 32-bit slots?
No says AMD!
"Hello,
Thank you for contacting AMD. Unfortunately no. The 64-bit card is physically larger than the standard 33Mhz 32bit slot. Therefore the card is not compatible.

So there you have it. Do not go out and buy those expensive 64 bit cards to put in your 32 bit slots you have!

Adaptec begs to differ. According to their specs their 39160 SCSI card is 64-bit, but is also "32-bit compatible."
Basically, it will work in a 32-bit PCI slot, it says, as long as it's fully PCI 2.1 compatible. I would give you a link, but it's in their knowledgebase search, and the URL would take up half the screen. If you're really interested, you can go to adaptec.com and just type in 32 bit PCI in their support knowledgebase.
So, like everything in the computer industry (or in life for that matter), it depends. Depends on the card, depends on the motherboard. AMD just told you that it couldn't to be on the safe side. Probably because they figured you didn't know what you were talking about, as many tech support people think.
Truthfully, I never even bother contacting technical support anymore. Most of them know less than I do, and even if you get someone who knows as much, they might give you a safe answer like that.

He's really just talkin about this previous post here:

I have even told him about specific 64-bit pci cards that are 32-bit compatible and given him links with pictures. But I must agree, in most cases it is a waste to buy a 64-bit card and put it in a 32-bit slot.
