add/remove tool and floppy drive troubles

When I tried to use the add/remove feature, it would go as
far as the application remnant cleaner window and stops.
My floppy drive would run and grind constantly until I
would go to the task manager and hit "end task" for the
application remnant cleaner. I went to Microsoft's support
site and following their instructions but now it hangs up
at the application remnant cleaner window and the floppy
drive is running and grinding constantly with other
uninstall programs. What can be causing this and how do I
fix it? Thanks ! Kathy
