This chipset is the reason i will buy another Intel Processor - it is shipping in large quantities from Via. Does anyone know which companies are releasing new boards and roughly when??
Thanks
The P4X266 reviews are interesting since a single channel DDR-SDRAM closely matched the dual channel RDRAM of the P4!
With Intel i845 using DDR as well as SDR memories and the i850 using RDRAM, P4 has support for all memories from home. So I dont think the 850 will die so soon.
VIA chipsets are cheaper as compared to intel, but I dont think they are as reliable, and compatibility is a traditional problem with VIA.
Anyway I wont be recommending the current socket 423 P4, but would say wait for the microPGA 478 pin Northwood. By that time SiS and ALi P4 chipsets also would be around and you will have choice.
Asus, MSI, Gigabyte will have some time to go for this VIA chipset although anyone of these might announce a board with P4X266 soon enough.
But anyway, I'd say you wait for a couple of months and go for P4 Northwood microPGA socket 478 processor on a i845 chipset board with DDR RAM! If you have a option, go or the cheaper ALi, if not VIA and lastly, SiS in that order.
